Hypothetical: How far north can hogs live?
In the Northeast forum, there was an article about confirmed wild hogs in central NY. What kind of winter conditions can these creatures survive. I'm in VT and while I think it might be fun to hunt hogs, I don't think our deer herd can take the competition. Need I worry?:D

RE: Hypothetical: How far north can hogs live?
Well put it this way for them living in the north. We have a problem with hogs in Manitoba and have an open season during the year without requiring a hunting license. They are pretty hardy animals that can stand very cold weather...

RE: Hypothetical: How far north can hogs live?
Manitoba? I guess they can take the cold.
It's probably only a matter of time before they migrate to New England. |
RE: Hypothetical: How far north can hogs live?
Not if we can help it. They won’t make it past the border...

WOW Manitoba!
For a while I thought our nordic herdswere something to mention but I have never heard ofeuroasian pigs going further than 60 degrees north but you got that beaten for sure. |
RE: Hypothetical: How far north can hogs live?
These hogs are not native to the land but boars that have escaped from farms and have been creating problems for wildlife. I was just replying to how hardy these animals are under extreme cold conditions...

3D, I'm just asking cause I don't know. Is Russia further than the 60*? Central Russia Hunting You answered that one yourself. Central of Russia is the 60. I found no sources of pigs in the northernmost half of Russia. Our pigs are also runaways but they are pure wild boar and are mostly loved, not always by the farmers though, but on a lecture by a wildlife mangement official they give three times more than they cost. Problem is its not the guy that takes the costs that get the pay. What problem for wild life? And what do they eat when the ground is frozen? Maybe I answered that myself? |

RE: Hypothetical: How far north can hogs live?
With all the negative experience of introducing new speciesaround the world your pigs probably wouldhave to be eradicated.[:o]I guess that in the far north many plants often grow very very slowly and a pig can probably ruine large areas for quite some time.
The harassments and problems can perhaps be related to the facts that the pigs dont find enough to eat and are getting desperate. Or that they are first generation escapers and remembers that food comes from humans. I am only guessing now[&:] |

RE: Hypothetical: How far north can hogs live?
I saw aphoto in the DEC office here in Fairbanks, Alaska of a guy with a feral hog that he killed incidentally while moose hunting in the Mat-Su valley in southcentral Alaska. I know of two reputable sources that have seen feral hogs outside of Fairbanks as well. Likely farm escapees. Last year a guy reported that there was a large group of feral hogs roaming through the Big Susitna Drainage south of Denali National Park. They're actually listed in the hunting regulations up here as deleterious exotic game. No season no limit. I doubt their survival rate is very high considering all the bears around here. That and it's -48 here today.

RE: Hypothetical: How far north can hogs live?
We have hogs in southwest Wisconsin and can they do damage. Our cornfields get knocked down pretty good, alfalfa fields rutted up about 3-4 inches deep and the woods gets knocked down form them looking for acorns and the like. Just went out last weekend looking for sign after a snowfall and not a track to be seen. In the summer though they seem to be very active and strictly nocturnal. I'll try and attach a picture I took of them w/ my camera. Sorry tried picture but file to large.

SORRY...don't download that pic, it's a big screen of nothing tried to crop to get file smaller and got nothing!

RE: Hypothetical: How far north can hogs live?
I'm sure wild hogs aren't native too much further than the 60 (where the heck is the degree sign on my keyboard?). But knowing these animals, I would be that once you introduced them to an area, if they could find a food and water source, they would thrive.
