Hogs at night Florida?
 

I havn't read anything that makes me think you can hunt hogs at night in Central Florida area. We are hunting land by SR27 & SR192. Can anyone give me details on this. If this is true We see hogs all the time at night and would get a chance at one of the monsters we see at night.

As long as you are 300ft from any county or state rd and are not trespassing on private property or WMA!

Sure you can, but not a flash light. You need a light with some 200,000 candle power. Big, you're not hunting rabbits and it can get pretty hairy if aBoss Hog turns on you in the dark and I would'nt go alone either!

i would be careful..please read up on the laws so you wont be breaking any and by all means dont be stupid about hog hunting, like they said, you dont want to be alone and you definately dont want to be out there with a lil itty bitty light..just be careful

Well I would hunt fron a stand. But if you guys think it is a bad idea then I will rethink that. I am still new to all this. The guys im with know what they are doing.

Well maybe im a$$ backwards. We have a trail where they come out of the swamp at night. So I can hear them coming. Its white sand and with a 50mm scope I can see them. You can hear them most of the time so we could spot them and then shot. But if you guys think this is a bad idea then maybe I shouldn't do it that way. Maybe we will just take the trucks out along the roads and see if we can see them. You can see where they have been all along the roads at night.

Big, I'm not trying to be rude to you, but I'm quessing from your quote, that the 50mm scope is InFra-Red for night vision?

No it not just a Simmoms 3-9X50. I was told by a friend that the 50mm will let more light in. I have been able to see when its dark on the white sand if the moon is out some. Is this not true that the 50mm will let more light in?

Ive neverbeen in Florida and am probably far from as experienced as others here on the forum (That means you, for instance, Rebelhog;)). That saidI can statethat Ive never heard of anyone hunt with dogs at night around here but regulary from stands at night in moonlight with a good scope. Like a8x56, as expensive as you can get, with a really thick or illuminated reticleat best,but it is easy enough to see if your kit works. Shoot at night at a black target and you will know. Quality of the scope is probably a better messurement tool than the following but the exit pupil in darkness of an human eye is around 7mm so all the light that get in that area is useful. The formula Ive been taught for brightness in scopes are this:

objective size in mm/ magnification=exit pupil size in mm.

So if you have a 50 mm lens your optimal magnification would in accordence withthis theory be seven times.

Arund herepigs aremostly huntedwith baitwith hay spread on the ground to make the pig appear brighter against the background. Much like the sand would in your description. Stand makes the shot easier and makes it also easier to determine gender and to find an animal in your desired size.

We hunt them at night as well from a stand. Like 3Ddepression said use a good scope and with any moonlight alot of times you can shoot without a light. We never hunt alone at night because there is a danger of something happening, but it is really effective way to hunt them. We normally have one person holding a light and the other perrson shooting if we need additional light. With my gun I use if I have any moonlight at all I can see really good and have no problems shooting without a light. I use a Marlin .450 with a Ziess 3 x 9 x 50 which gathers alot of light.

How does your dogs work at night?
Do they pin the pig for a stalk or do they drive them to positioned shooters?
Why at night? Id though it more dangerous for the dog?

No, the 2bay dogs keep them at bay and the 2 catch dogscome and 1 chumps on his nuts and the other on his snout, then the other 2 dogs join in.
I just drive slowly down the logging roadsand the dogs let me know that there are hogs close by and want out of thier boxes. We stop and let the 2bay dogs out and they will let us know when to let out the 2 catch dogs. We start runningin the direction of the dog barks untill we get to the catch. We use head9volt light gear and use either side arms or knife to cut thier throats or tie them up and take them live. Sometimes if they are small, we just cutthier nuts and turn them loose to let them get bigger.
Never go by your selfwhen hunting with dogs. We usally try to be aleast 3 of us and expirienced dog hoghunters at that! During the day, it's only 2 of us. Sometimes we catch 5-6 hogs in one day or night!
Dog hog hunting is not for everybody, you have to know what you're doing and don't have time to teach anyone that is new doing this while on the hunt!

Seems actionpacked for sure!!! Toughlooking dogs to!I guess that the night situation and the second pair of dogs being so close to the pig makes for a more intense situation with pigs perhaps more dangerous. From the pictures I can see why shooting is not always an option with the dogs so close. How big does your pigs grow? Do your dogs sort out yearlings or do they go for first, best pig? Some dogs here shy away from big pigs thats why Im asking. Your dogs look like they sure can handle everything that walks, swims or crawls. How do you train them?

3D, we have many 200-300 pounders. That's the problem with good hog dogs, they don't care how big they are and it's when they get cut or killed. The big curled up T'ousches is not the ones that kill, it's the long straight ones that do. You don't want dogs with long legs or thier bellys will get cut opened. That's why we cross Pits with Calahoulas and Rhrodesians, thier legs and their slip joint jaw which locks when they bite.
No the dogs go for any size hog. We start to train them when they are about 6 months old. When we skin a hog, we save a skin to tease the pups and for them tolearn the scent. At that time we also teach them commands of what we want of them at the time of the hunt.

I'mjust a has been that got to old and tired bones to run after them anymore!:)Still love it though!

If you want to hunt'em out of a stand in Florida...do it now!! If you try to hunt'em at night in the summer the bugs are so loud that you can't even here them 5 yds under the feeder. We use HawgLites on our bows with Lumenoks, both of which are available on my website. It's a blast, set the feeder to go off at an hour or so past dark.

Interesting dog mix Rebelhog. Here long legged dogs are often preferred as they are belived to negotiate long grass and wetlands better. In thickets terriers like mine are more agile to manouver between the trees. Also its told that small dogs are less prone to get hurt if the pig throws them.

What to say about your age sir. Im guessing experience makes for less running and evens the odds huh!;)

my buddy has a sod farm and he had to get a permit to shoot hogs at night. we killed one once and the warden came out and ask us for it, thank god he had it. i'm pretty sure it's illegal where i'm at in florida. thats the southwest part of the state, Desoto county to be more exact

Zester, that's the first time I have heard that and I have been doing it for close to 50 years! Hogs in Fla.are only
legal game on WMA's and can only be hunted in season and no night hunting. On private property you can hunt hogs all year-round and run the dogs, kill the hogs and at night!

i've heard that too. a friend of mine checked with a gamewarden friend of his. i think it's becuase you'r using a spotlight and a firearm only.

hunting with dogs at night is leagal. a friend of mine used to do it all of the time. we're actually thinking of getting a couple of dogs now.

When I lived down there the only guy I knew that hunted Hogs said he used American Bulldogs. Is that common and does it sound like they would be a good dog for that

Danny, I crossed Calahoulas, Rhodesian Ridge Back and Pit Bulls, cause it gives the right heightand powerful jaws. If the dogs are long legged, they get thier bellys cut opened easier, if the legs are to short, they can't reach the hogs ears to good.
All hog men do thier own crossing with the breeds they like and I crossed mine with the ones that gave me what I was looking for in a catch dog!:)
