What are some hog sign

What are things to look for? Hogs are legal all year here in kY and i might try some bowhunting next year for them?

Tracks but don't get fooled a hogs track can resemble deer tracks, goats and sheep.Hogs will have more rounded toes... Rooting, they love to root, in Texas, were we have lots of acorns they will certainly leave evidence they have been there. Wallows, are a great place to set up a blind. Scants (Droppings) will resemble dog dropping, and depending on what they have been feeding on they can leave patties, or can resemble human waste...
I can tell around my deer feeders, they have knocked them down, or left what resembles a beach volley ball sand when they are finished.

RE: What are some hog sign

Look for rub lines on trees coming from wallows to heavy cover. Rooting is good, but rooting just tells you where they BEEN! Our most effective spots are 50-100 yd. openings like hallways with heavy cover on one side and wallows and water on the other. Find the trails and catch them trucking in between. Here are some pics for you!! Feel free to check out my website for more info and product line!

The Rev and Bigboar have covered it real good. One other thing, you can smell
a fresh wallow 100yds away and a dog can smell it at500.

i'll try to get some pics of all of the stuff around where i hunt. we have 2 huge wallows in a pond with all kinds of tree rubbings around like the others. also there are all kinds of beds where they have laid down for a while after getting all muddy. there are also a bunch of tusk marks in trees. all of the above are great signs to look for..... oh yeah and seeing the hogs!!!! :D;)

Ma, those are great pics. You just reminded me of something else. Don;t follow a deer track backwards. The rear of a deer track can look like the front of a pig track when you can't see the whole track. I followed a couple of deer backwards myself once or twice.

yeah that's a really good point too. sometimes depending on what the animal was walking in it can seem like a hog track or vice versa.

Is the size of wallow the same as the sizeas thepiggy:} ?
Or the size mean how many pigs are useing it?

Do they vist them in daylight or night?

RE: What are some hog sign

txmarshmonkey.. what caused the tree to be so ravaged? I'm from Wisconsin and never hunted hogs but intend to next year. Was there some kind of salt or bait put around that tree to cause the hogs to do such damage? I've seen deer do that kind of damage if you bait next to a tree or salt a tree.

I've been watching hunting shows of hog hunts in Texas and Florida and have finally decided I just have to get down there and try that. I want to hunt them with a muzzleloader which should make it more interesting. So excuse me if I ask a lot of what seems to be simple questions. I hate to be uninformed when I hunt something. I think the first time out, I will hire a guide just to make sure I do things right, see hogs, and learn something.

Cayugad, what you see on the tree's is where the hogs
were rubbing the mud off themselfs. They use the trees
as a sratcher, the higher the marks on the trees, the
taller the hog is. You can smell a fresh hog wallow 100yds
away. Dogs can smell them 500yds away.

When they go to rooting it will look like someone used a tractor and disc to plow up the field.
A few hogs can turn a hay meddow into an tractor killer real fast.

RE: What are some hog sign

No wonder our Department of Natural Resources is so concerned about a current report of hogs running wild in one part of our State. I have been around domestic hogs far longer then I care to think sometimes, and they are an intelligent and clever animal. You need to watch them all the time. Wild ones with the same kind of intellect and survival skills on top of that, sound like a excellent hunt...

Also I was watching a television program last week. People were using catch dogs and chase dogs to hunt the hogs I believe in Florida or someplace down South. I tuned in after the program started but judging by the ferns and undergrowth, I am guessing a warm wet climate. I believe they said the breed was a pit bull that was the catch dog. Fascinating to watch the dogs do what it appears they love to do. Whether I would want to bring one in alive is another matter, but it was something to watch.

Needless to say, this hog hunting is getting me wanting to book a hunt. I just hope I have a good experience the first time out.

Cayugad,
In 1967 I ordered 2 Calahoula pups from Arkansas and
started crossing with Calahoula, Rhrodisian Ridge Back,
and Pitt Bull. I quit hunting hogs with dogs in 2000 and
gave my6 dogs to my life long hunting partner. I had
2 Trail dogs, 2 Bay dogs and 2 Catch dogs for 33yrs.
In 2000 I started hunting deer without dogs.

like others have mentioned, tracks, Mud rubbed on trees, and holes in the ground. If you are not familuar with hog tracks, they tend to be fatter than deer and not as pointed. They also have a tendency to leave due claw prints (that is if you call the two little holves due claws)

Trapper,

Pigs must be near water during hot weather. During the heat of the day, they come to their watering hole, have a drink, a wallow around then have a good rub up against a tree before going back to camp. They love to root up soft soil and farmer’s crops just after rain too.

Best time to nail pigs is at sunrise or sunset when they are on the move.

Pig rooting.

Boar print next to a 30-06 round.

what type of land do they prefer? Forest, open fields?

RE: What are some hog sign

Colby

Densities vary depending on conditions, with about onepig per square kilometre in woodland, forest and grazing land, and as many as 10–20 in wetlands and seasonally inundated floodplains. Boars generally roam alone over an area of up to 40 square kilometres, while sows range over areas smaller than 20 square kilometres. During dry conditions, groups of up to 100 pigs may gather around waterholes.

One word of advice that I didn't see was don'ttrail one after you shot it. A buddy and I were out in the swamp and he stuck a pig just before dark. Instead of waiting till mornin we trailed it with flashlights and met its grandaddy around the corner. If don't think a pine sappling 6ft can hold a grown man think again. Wait for a while if your bow hunting otherwise shot it in the head.

When you see about 5 other veteran 4x4 trucks in one area hunting for hogs. LOL That is where the hogs are.

The hogs have just moved into the back 40 for the first time in years. They destroyed my food plot by rooting up the ground. It looks like they take a big ole shovel and dig up the ground. They eat every kernel of corn on the ground. Man I can't wait for gun season.

If you want pictures, just google something like "Hogs tearing up land", Etc.

You will often find a small peice of land with grass over it flipped over upside down with lots of roots dug up under it.
