Open sights on my howa
 

My howa 308 didn't come with open sights, it came with a 3-12x50 scope that's pretty dang good. But it's not perfect, that's why I'm going to put quick detach mounts on it and fiber optic open sights. Alot of open sights are going to be to low with the rail getting in my way. I'll just be straight up with y'all, I want the North American version of Larry potterfields "nearly perfect safari rifle" and all I really need help with is getting the open sights for it. I can handle everything else, so if anyone has any input that would be great. And just when you thought it was over, I'd like to keep it well under $50.

I'd say getting it all done for less than $50 will be difficult. Some smiths charge $25 or even $50 per hole for D&T, usually more for dovetails, so you just aren't going to get there. To make it look right, you might need to look into cutting a custom base for your desired sight in order to get the right height (that's what I would do). Williams and Marbles both have adjustable height sights, or sight bases/risers, so I'd take a look through their catalogs. NECG (among others) sell component bases to be used as starting points for scratch builds. With enough elbow grease and a steady hand, anyone with a drill press, time/patience, and a bit of know how can cut their own base and install sights themselves.

You can likely get the parts all for less than $50, but you'll have to do the dovetailing or D&T yourself, otherwise gunsmith fees are going to go over $50.

I went and watched the Midwayusa videos, looks to me like he used NECG front and rear sights. That swivel hood on the front sight is kinda novel, not sure how I feel about it in practice, but it does look custom and has a super cool "we thought about every detail" type advantage. Wouldn't be hard to replicate if you have the skills to do the sight base and sight fabrications and wanted to save some money instead of buying the NECG options (none too cheap - but I venture they're well worth the cost).

Under $50???? Thats going to be pretty tough unless you are scraping a sight from another gun and oing the work yourself. What type of sight are you looking to add?
