Winchester model 100
Hello, my question is about a Winchester 100 that I have the chance to pick up for a very good price. It belongs to a good friend and is in very good shape except for bad crown. Would shortening the barrel before having the rifle recrowned affect the function of it since its an autoloader?

I'm assuming this is a standard 22" barrel to begin with? A carbine model was available over the years with 19" barrels. I'm not sure what at what length the gas/piston port is in the barrel but would have to assume it's well inside of 16" so as long as you don't get around that port you should be fine.
I'd also ask if the recall was done on that gun, Winchester had a big bruhaha in 1990 with the firing pins on the 100 rifles and carbines. |
First off, why do you want to cut the barrel down, rather than just a recrown job?

I have always liked short barreled rifes. I have had a number of 30-06's, 308's, a 257 Roberts, and a 270. All with barrels 20" or less. Im willing to give up a little MV and have a little more muzzle blast for a rifle that handles and looks the way i want. My latest is a H&R 1871 With a 16.5" barrel in 308. OAL of 34.5". Never had a problem shooting it and it works for me.
