A Tough One-Nagant
 

Alright, I picked up a bad Mosin Nagant, Barrel is a mess, trigger is broken. I only got it to cut the stock down and make a nice wood stock for one of my other ones. Here's my problem.
The trigger must be missing something inside, because it just flops back and forth loosely. How can I remove the bolt with the trigger not working? Any good ideas?
I could just cut the bolt to get the stock off, but the bolt may be one of the few good things left on this rifle. So I'd like to save it.
Any help is appreciated.

I got it. I shook the gun, while pulling back on the bolt. Took a while, but it came out. The gun was missing a pin, probably lost while someone was trying to clean it. The barrel is a mess like I said, Not sure if it's worth trying to clean up. Looks like someone shot corrosive ammo through it then never cleaned it.

Instead of using it to stake up tomatoes find a take off Rem 700 barrel[same thread size] in .308 win or 30-06 and have a smith set it back and rechamber it to 7.62x53R.Same as the parent case except it uses .308 dia bullets like some of the Finn Nagants.Timney makes a drop in trigger with side safety as well......JMO........Harold

They are cheap enough to repair, may try gun broker for a used barrel.

I'll look into it. I'm starting back to school for spring semester next week, so it may be a while before I get into it. The stock is coming out nice though.

Or a rem take-off barrel re-chambered to 30-40 Krag?

How would this work? Buy the barrel? screw it in? What bolt work would need to be done?

A gunsmith would have to cut 1/2" or so off of the .308 or 30-06 take off barrel to clean up the chamber for the new cartridge dimensions.Then finish re-threading it and ream it out to 30-40 Krag if that's what you want.Or less if you go the 7.62x53R .308 bore .Mosin Nagants are 1x16" same as a Win 70,rem 700 or Ruger 77.All of which can provide donor barrels.Use 7.62x54R dies with the expander removed for making 7.62x53R to grip .308 bullets.........Harold

Did a Russian over to 30-40 years ago. Made a new bolt head so the rim of the case fit in the bolt face and extractor worked. If I remember right I made a wider ejector also. I used an 0'3 Springfield barrel. It functioned fine, shot good enough but not great. It was really not worth the effort put in. You would really, really have to like them to waste time on one. Take a brush on a drill and go after the original barrel with bore cleaner just to make sure the bullet is not restricted. I have done this with ***anese Island guns with really bad looking bores and some turned out to be excellent shooters. I have hunted with them and killed deer with them, but that was mostly when I was a kid and a Russian rifle was so cheap that a box of ammo for the rifle cost more than the gun. If you want to build a gun for hunting, start with a Mauser or Arisaka.
