Painting Question

1 Attachment(s)
I have a question for everyone who's ever camoed a gun. I'm planning to do it and I'm pretty excited to do it as well. I plan to put in some of those Studs for a swivel aswell, My question is, what all can I paint and what all can't I paint? I realize that I cant put paint in the action but I cant think of many other places that I need to mask off, I'll stick a cork in the end of the barrel so that it doesnt go down in, and I'll plug up the action so no paint goes in there, I plan to do basically what this guy did.

Anyhow I plan to tape off the numbers of the scope and that type of stuff just I dont know for sure what else I should do it to.

Anyone ever do one or have any suggestions?

Ryan.

How durable is the finish?
Will it stand up to normal field use and the rigors of cleaning solvents? I'm thinking that KG Gunkote or Ceracote would be a better way to go and just canned spray paint.

I have seen some of these that are very durable, but it all boils down to the prep work, quality of paint and what kind of clear coat goes over it to protect it. I did a 22 that had a cracked stock for my son in a black textured finish. It has held up very well and is easier to grip now in foul weather than it was before. As far as prep work, remove the action and everything from the stock before hand. I would not want my action painted to my stock. If you are going to paint the barrel and chamber, make sure that you get the action taped off with blue or green painters tape. If you have a separate trigger guard I would remove it and paint it separate as well. I would also mask off the scope mount too if it is a Weaver style if you aren't going to remove it.
