My .308 broke a firing pin today or spring it is putting a light mark on primer. Also looking at the bolt it appears to have a hairline crack in the face,maybe not will look at,at work in magnifying glass tomarrow. Does anyone know a good gunsmith I can maybe mail the bolt to to repair or maybe where I can buy a new bolt assembly and put into my rifle. I have had this rifle a long time and killed my first deer and several others with it.

disassemble the bolt to see if the firing pin really is broke....

I'd bet against it!

Also....the "possible" hairline crack should be magnafluxed to determine if it's a real crack. You might be able to determine if it is under a magnifying glass but magnafluxing is the best way. Not every gunsmith has one!!!

Try Dave Kliss at PTG as I think he makes new bolts for the Rem 788. It would have to be gunsmith installed and won't be cheap.

Frankly, if it was mine and the bolt actually was cracked.....I'd hang it up!....you can buy a used M-700 for less than the cost of installing (properly) a new bolt in your 788

Another way to find cracks in metal, go to a welding shop and buy a crack finding kit. The kit will have 2 arosol cans, spray the red on the part first then when dry spray the cover on, any crack will bleed thru the cover and show as a red line. Automotive machine shops may also have the spray kits and some have magnaflux machines too.

I pulled firing pin and spring seemed ok. Maybe dirt just got into and jammed pin cleaned up and snded rough spots on pin surface put back together. tried out on a couple of brass with just primers working now will try out at gun range on live ammo. The little line is hard to tell I looked at in a magnifying light and glass at work. The line might have always been there? I just now looked at the face real close trying to figure out firng pin problem.
