Accubond after shot....PICS!
I went to the range today to work on a load for my 257 Bob. I think I found a load, but I wanted to share with all of you what a 110gr Accubond looks like after hitting sand and sandstone. I was rather impressed how well they held up considering what they were hitting.
BTW, the loads I have selected so far with this bullet are: 1) 47.5gr Reloader 19, W-W brass, Rem. 9-1/2 Primers, seated to 2.835 2) 37.5gr IMR 4064.....everything else is the same. I don't have a chrony, so I have no idea what these loads produce velocity wise, but the first load is a tad over max and the second is 1gr under max. No signs of pressure. I'm going to work with them a little more before I settle one. Here's the pic: ![]() From left to right: 55.9gr, 53.1gr, 53.2gr, & 46.2gr. |

RE: Accubond after shot....PICS!
I swear I took at least a dozen pics and this is the best one.....you'd think for what I paid for that damn camera it would take pictures for me! It obviously doesn't like to take close ups.....I just got an idea, pic may change!

RE: Accubond after shot....PICS!
Jason - where did you get the 110 Accubond bullets? I have been waiting to try these in my .25-06 AI, but haven't been able to find a source yet. Thx. Roskoe

RE: Accubond after shot....PICS!
A local shop has them for more than any online source($17.99), but they have a couple of boxes left. I can give you there info if you like. I would think you could have a shop close to you get them for you or are you saying nobody can get them for you either? I know Midway and Cabela's are both out of stock. You might be able to get them directly from Nosler, but I'm not sure about that. For as much as I'll shoot them the cost isn't prohibitive, but I load up cheap bullets for just shooting anyway.
BTW, pic is fixed....forgot about that MACRO function.[&:] |

|
RE: Accubond after shot....PICS!
You can buy them right from Nosler, but alas, they're out of stock too. Hope they tool up for them soon....I only have 8 left and need to load up 100 rounds. I suppose it's not the end of the world though, I have until November. They should surely have them re-run by then.

RE: Accubond after shot....PICS!
I saw on the Nosler website were they had a 257 Roberts load with the 110 gr. Accubond rated at 3075 fps. My 257 Rob. loaded with 48.0 gr. or RL19 under a 100 gr BT only gives me 3000 fps over my chrony. I would guess you are maybe running 2850-2900 fps. I haven't given the Accubonds a try but I did give up on the 100 gr. BT's because of poor performance on whitetail deer and feral hogs. I switched to the 117 gr. Hornady BTSP over H4831 with a MZ of about 2900 fps and good accuracy. I've tried the Accubonds in my 280 Remington and like them alot. I haven't run across a box of the 110 gr. in my area.
I'm sure you know that most manuals load the Roberts anemic even with what they consider +P loads. The only manual I have that loads to the Roberts velocity potential is the Barnes manual in my opinion. As always use safe loading practices watching for pressure signs and have fun. I'm glad to see someone else using the 257 Roberts. |
RE: Accubond after shot....PICS!
I know I'll be shooting about 200 fps slower than any data shows since I have a 20" BBL and most books show data with a 24" BBL. I've considered buying a chrony, but I just can't justify it. I'd only use it a couple of times a year and I don't care much about velocity....so long as the accuracy is there anyway. Thanks for the info! I've not looked at a Barnes manual, but I do know that even the +P load are really anemic. Every load I've ever shot out of this rifle is above max with no signs of pressure, save one. When I use Remington primers they tend to flatten a bit. I don't put much stock in this though simply because I've loaded down about 10% from max on a non +P load only to find they do the same thing. No other pressure signs at all and an accurate rifle. While we're on the subject, has anyone found Rem. 9-1/2's to flatted a bit even with light loads such as described? It doesn't happen with CCI's in my rifle....just the Rems. Rems give me better performance, so that's what I'm sticking with....just curious.
I think this is one of the best whitetail calibers out there, but it seems to have never really gotten much respect. I love it and won’t be trading it off ever as far as I can tell. Loading it truly is the only way to get the designed performance out of it anyway. |
RE: Accubond after shot....PICS!
I think this is one of the best whitetail calibers out there I to think the .257 cal is one of the best whitetail calibers!!! |
RE: Accubond after shot....PICS!
Jason N - hey, thanks alot! I just called Widner's and ordered a couple of boxes of the .257 Accubonds. Will let you know how they shoot in my .25-06 AI. Roskoe

RE: Accubond after shot....PICS!
those accubonds look pretty good, i might have to try them out in my gun, i use winchester silvertips and had great success with them, i got a couple that i retrieved from my moose i shot last year, it was about 300-350 yrds away, if anyone is interested let me know i can post the pictures for ya to check out the mushromming on the silvertips.

RE: Accubond after shot....PICS!
That's only around 50% weight retention. I don't think that's very good for medium game. I'd rather shoot Partitions and get 80% or better weight retention.
|
RE: Accubond after shot....PICS!
50% weight retention after hitting a mixture of sand and sandstone is pretty good. My experience so far with the Accubonds is that they will normally run about 75% when recovered from game.

RE: Accubond after shot....PICS!
Aren't the Nosler Partitions and Accubonds only designed for 50-70% weight retention? That seems pretty good especially considering what those bullets were shot into.
|
RE: Accubond after shot....PICS!
Accubonds:
1. Fully tapered, heavy alloy jacket is bonded to the special lead alloy core through a proprietary process designed for controlled expansion, deep penetration and 60-70% weight retention. I didn't see anything on Nosler's website about the weight retention on the partitions, but I didn't look all that hard for it. Partitions are designed to expand and lose the front and the "H" keeps the back in tact. If they bonded the front of the partitions that would be an exceptional bullet I would think. Like before, I consider what these bullets went into to be much more 'harsh' than a whitetail and they seemed to hold exceptionally well. I'm a fan so far.....we'll see what they do on deer, but so far I see them as being a great bullet. There has to be someone out there with accubond experience for other calibers....how did they fair? |
RE: Accubond after shot....PICS!
From their website -
The Accubond - 1. Fully tapered, heavy alloy jacket is bonded to the special lead alloy core through a proprietary process designed for controlled expansion, deep penetration and 60-70% weight retention. 5. Enclosed rear core retains more than half the original bullet weight for deep penetration. |
RE: Accubond after shot....PICS!
Well, I shot a cow elk with a .270 AI back in December using the Accubond. Broadside at about 325 yards, the bullet went through both lungs and exited - although I suspect not by much. Elk stumbled about 25 yards and fell over. My only "complaint" was that the bullet appeared to open up fairly fast (like a partition), making a sizeable hole through the ribs, and then settled into a finger size wound channel through the lungs. In contrast, the Swift Scirocco out of the same gun makes a small hole through the ribs - and a pretty big hole in the lungs. End results were pretty good, though.

RE: Accubond after shot....PICS!
Roskoe, Cabelas has the 110gr .25cal AccuBond bullets.
|
RE: Accubond after shot....PICS!
Thanks, RH. I tried to order some from them back in April - no dice. Have a couple boxes coming from Widner's. I'm out in the reloading room right now prepping some 25-06 Ackley Improved cases. Hope to have the bullet by mid week, and do some testing shortly thereafter. Roskoe

RE: Accubond after shot....PICS!
Well, I got my .257 Accubonds in from Widner's yesterday. Went out this morning and gave them a test drive. Out of my .25-06 AI they were hanging right around 1" at 100 yards in a fair breeze. At 3496 FPS, they should be a great long range bullet for medium big game.

Roskoe, sounds great on your test. I have a web site you might be
interested in. They have the pictures also. http://www.collectorsfirearms.com/modernhandguns.htm If it does'nt come up, type it in your Search! |
RE: Accubond after shot....PICS!
Thanks, RH. There are a bunch of rare and intersting pistols in there :)
|
RE: Accubond after shot....PICS!
I'm begining to think this is very "A" grade bullet for the quarter bores. Sounds like great results.
