Best factory ammo
What is the best factory round for the .243 on deer size game. thanks
|
RE: Best factory ammo
That all depends on what you rifle likes or will shoot. Some of mine like Federal Premium and others like the much cheaper Remington CoreLokts.I would suggest buying different brands and different bullet weights to see what your rifle likes. No two rifles are the same. They will all shoot different using the same ammunition. Hit and miss you might say.

RE: Best factory ammo
I agree with RR, your rifle will tell you. Remington, Hornady, Winchester, Federal, etc.. all make good ammo and either make or use good bullets. Now time to find the right combo.
I would suggest using the heavier grained bullets for whitetail deer. The 85 grain Sierra Game King hollow point is a good lighter weight, but with the .243 you really need 95 -100 + at least in my opion. |
RE: Best factory ammo
I always had good luck with 100 Gr. Federal Premium,Or 100 Gr. Hornady Custom .

RE: Best factory ammo
I like Federal - but I think all factory ammo is excellent these days.

RE: Best factory ammo
swampdog are you talking about the light mags that hornady makes
or the interlocks |
RE: Best factory ammo
I tell ya, its hard for me to keep up with federal these days reloading. They are just getting better and better. I looked at 20 rounds the other days from federal and measured all attributes. Shoulders, COL, concentricity. And everything was spot on.
Do that with remington, and watch your gauges jump all over the place. The last 2 guns I have bought, a 7mmSTW and 7mm-08, I went out while waiting on my dies and got some factories Federals, and both guns shot under 1MOA with this stuff. |
RE: Best factory ammo
I have owned at least a half dozen 243's in my day. In that time I've yet to find one that wouldn't shoot the Federal Premium 100 gr. Nosler Partition pretty well. I once had an old Mossberg bolt action that would put them nearly through the same hole. So, I went back to the local shop and bought the last 8 boxes he had from that lot #.
I will agree with the others in saying factory ammo of any form is much better than it was even 10 years ago. If you have the time and money I would start with the load above and if it doesn't meet your accuracty requirement try another brand but for deer I would stay in the 95-100 gr bullet weight. |
RE: Best factory ammo
I have always used Federal....but to be honest even the cheap Core Lokts and Winchester factory stuff shoots very well and I wouldnt hesitate a bit to use it while hunting. Its harder to find something that wont group in most of my guns now.
