RE: what gun would you pick????
What gun to pick? Depends a lot on available chamberings/cartridges the rifle could be had in, or conversly what rifles were available for a particular cartridge. For now, I guess I'd go with one I have, a Rem.700LSS Mtn.rifle in 270Win. It's not available in
308Win.
For the 308Win. I might go with one of the new Winchester Featherweights with
stainless action/barrel. Can't argue with a choice of 30-06 either, and it's available in
both of these rifles, or maybe a Ruger77 (for the 30-06).

Like a post above I say you haven't said specifically what game or situations you mean when you say "to hunt with".
So I would assume that you mean "everything that I now hunt or may hunt in the future". In that case you left out my best choice, a Rem. 1100 shot gun with two diffrent barrels. One would be a smooth bore tube with a changable choke system for all bird and some small game applications. The other barrel would be a rifled slug barrel with a low power variable scope. It would be an passable big game gun out to about 100yards or a little more (with sabot loads).
