What deer gun caliber?
im about to turn 18 and im going to buy my first deer gun. Im not sure what type of caliber to get though, i think im going to get a savage 111F. it comes in 270 Win., 30-06 Spfld., 7MM REG MAG, 300 WIN MAG. The only thing i can hunt in oklahoma as far as big game is about it whitetail. I was thinking maybe the 270. Is this a good rifle and caliber choice? thanks for any imput you can give me.

RE: What deer gun caliber?
The Savage should give you years of accurate and reliable service. And for nothing larger than whitetail, its hard to beat the good old, plain Jane .270 Winchester. It has been around for 80 years, and is showing no sign of disappearing any time soon, which I can't say for any of the new WSM's and such. I presume you don't reload, so the .270 would fill the bill the best, and is available LITERALLY in every turn in the road shop that sells ammo. GO FOR IT!!

RE: What deer gun caliber?
Amen, Charlie. Also has the lightest recoil of the group.
|
RE: What deer gun caliber?
The 270 would be a very good choice. There is no better deer rifle. It has ample power and shoots plenty flat and plenty far for any game in the lower 48. The 130 grain load is all you will need if it shoots good in your gun. The Savage is also an excellent choice. You are off to a good start. OH to be your age again.:D
|
RE: What deer gun caliber?
Would have to agree the .270 is a good gun al round close range and for distant shots. The recoil is a fairly light. I would prolly choose a winchester over savege because in my past savage purchases i have noticed the warping of the stock on the foregrip that causes pressure on the barrel. The model 70 is a nice gun and about the same price and the savage.

RE: What deer gun caliber?
I can't think of a better first rifle for deer than a Savage in 270 Win. Great choice on both rifle and caliber.
|
RE: What deer gun caliber?
thanks for the input but whats better the savage or the model 70? how far can i shoot with a 270?
|
RE: What deer gun caliber?
I'll say it like this,
the Winchester is a better rifle to look at. Where I live it's also a little more expensive. For out of the box accuracy and the finest standard trigger out there, you won't beat the Savage. Not no way, Not no how. ![]() |

You don't need a magnum for deer hunting - and even the great old '06 is more than necessary too. |
RE: What deer gun caliber?
How far you can shoot with a 270 depends on how much you practice. The 270 will cleanly kill out to 400 yards no problem. However you have to hit it first. NOT EASY. You need to have room to shoot those ranges and become familar with wind drift and bullet drop. I make 300 my max range for shooting at game animals. Little things can mean a lot when the ranges gets much past that.
|
RE: What deer gun caliber?
I been carryin a 270 for a long time deer hunting and they do a fine job. You will have a hard time finding a better gun for whitetails.
|
RE: What deer gun caliber?
Im only 26 and to tell the truth, down here in my woods; the longest shot is about 100yards. And I have killed more deer with my old 200dollars 30/30 marlin than all the other guns in my closet. 30/30 just doesnt have the range, and if you ever get to where you can get teh 200+ yard shot the 270 will not let you down. Also on the
For out of the box accuracy and the finest standard trigger out there, you won't beat the Savage |
RE: What deer gun caliber?
Call me old fashioned but I like a .308 for deer. I know more bullet than what is needed but you can also turn around if you get the opertunaty and easily hunt larger game such as moose with it.
Plus you can get .308 ammo on the cheep everywhere. I like your choice of gun. I have had my Savage 110LC for 22 years and it is still one of the most accurate guns in my stable. |
RE: What deer gun caliber?
I'd have to agree that you can't beat the Savage out of the box. My preferences lie in other directions right now, i.e. I prefer a hinged floorplate over a blind magazine, s/s over blued, synthetic over wood that sort of stuff. That's not to say I don't own any wood stocked blued guns, most of what I own is. The 270 is a great cartridge, manageable recoil, flat shooter and IMO capable of taking most game in NA with the exception of the big bears. I personally would go for the 06, much better selection of factory loads that can be found at the most remote of locations. Not to mention that the 06 will do anything the 7mm mag or 3.. winmag will do just a couple hundred fps slower. I'd suggest checking pawn shops and the used racks, with the money you save buy a better scope.

RE: What deer gun caliber?
Hello young man. If it were me, I would purchase a new Winchester mod 70 in 30'06. This is a rifle for a lifetime and who knows where lady luck will take you. If you have a chance at a big Bull Moose or Elk someday, the '06 is the one and the new Winchesters are rapidly gaining a strong reputation (I don't own one, I'm a Sako guy). The local gun baron....a remington man, claims the new Mod 70's are superior to the pre 64's. A fellow posted the 270 has been around for a long time, but the'06 has been around for over 100 years. Don't get confused by all this and keep asking the same question.... it will soon be clear. Good luck and regards, Rick.

yep my model 70 was picked up at academy in beaumont texas for 319.99 and in a 300WSM its a nice gun

RE: What deer gun caliber?
The Savage rifle in 270Win. will do just fine for deer hunting. Ammo is readily available most anywhere, and not too expensive. Recoil is mild. The Savage is a good gun for the money. The Winchester may look a little nicer, but not likely to shoot any better, and generally costs quite a bit more. Save your money, and invest in good quality scope.
As to range with a 270Win., as noted it is certainly capable of some long range shooting (400+ yds.), but unless you're practiced at those distances it's best to hold your shots to 300yds. or less - preferrably less. My own personal favorite for a 270Win., though more expensive than a Savage, is the Remington 700 LSS Mountain Rifle. Shoots real good too. Check it out; Link: http://www.remington.com/firearms/ce...e/700mtnls.htm |
RE: What deer gun caliber?
.270 would be an excellent choice my man. plenty of power and ammo is available pretty much everywhere, even Wal-Mart. In fact, while you're there, check out the Remington Model 700 ADL's on sale for 321.00!!! Remington is closing out the line sad to say but why not take advantage of this great sale while it last. You could even take the money you saved on this rifle and slap it into a nice stock from Boyd's.

RE: What deer gun caliber?
The 270 is nearly the perfect deer caliber. But, if, sometime in the future you want to go after elk, moose ect... it will be a big let down and not perform as well as the others, it CAN be used, BUT shouldnt really. the 06, 7mag, 300mag will ALL perform Much better than the 270 on the big animals(and the deer too). If recoil is a problem I would suggest that you shoot a 300mag before buying one, I dont think that they're bad for recoil, but some people do. So....if you NEVER plan on hunting bigger animals get the 270 it's near perfect for deer, but if at a latter date you might get a chance at some bigger animals skip it, go for something bigger.

RE: What deer gun caliber?
The win m70 is a good gun. I have one as well as a savage. The savage is a little more accurate out of the box. Both good guns. the winny just looks better. Either gun is great and you can't go wrong. IN fact, at walmart, they are the same price under $400 with a cheap scope and sling.
the .270 is a good choice too for deer. However as others mentioned, the 30.06 is a little more versitile. and the recoil is not much more then the .270 IMO. I use my 30.06 for deer as well as my 7mm-08 (which is one of the best deer calibers IMO). they both take down deer, but the 30.06 will allow me to hunt bigger game if the need ever arises. Also, bullet weights are more plentiful with the 06. Ammo is cheap too and everyone has it. |
RE: What deer gun caliber?
i really would like to eventually hunt bigger game but within the next six years thats not going to happen. when i do buy my rifle i will be basicly draining every penny i have lol so i wont be able to get anything really much above fourhundred. Ill have to look into the 30 06 though but for now im still leaning for the 270. how good of a scope is on the wal mart savage combo? and if its bad what type should i get thats with in a reasonable price?
|
RE: What deer gun caliber?
I am also 18 , skins. Get a .270 Win. You can take deer to elk size game with it. The rifle I just got a year or so ago is a Browning Abolt II Medallion. Its a badass gun , looks sweet , and shoots as good as it looks. That would be my recomendation.

RE: What deer gun caliber?
Originally hailing from Illinois (no rifles allowed), getting a rifle was new to me. I did my homework and investigated the calibers. I wanted something that was versatile and easy to get a hold of (read .270 or 30-06).
I too never thought I would hunt anything bigger than whitetails, for which the .270 is perfect and I was heavily leaning towards getting one. However, an opportunity arose and I am planning a trip to Colorado this fall to hunt elk and boy am I glad I bought the 30-06. Like so many others have said on this thread…you can walk into Bob’s Philips 76 station in the middle of nowhere and he’ll have 30-06 cartridges sitting on the shelf. I can’t say that is true for some of the newer calibers out there. Both are great cartridges…I just felt the 30-06 gave me more options. The 30-06 will take any game I plan to hunt in North America, even the elk I thought I would never hunt. Regards, Steve |
RE: What deer gun caliber?
The 270 Winchester is my favorite, eventhough I shoot a 7mm Rem. Mag. for everything.

?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ??????????????
|
RE: What deer gun caliber?
Honestly, you can take em out to 500 if your a good long range dude. I hunt in the hunter Oklahoma area and you can get some 300 yard shots, but you need to make up for wind, bullet drop and such. I am not good at all of that and have only shot one deer since I started hunting last year. Just wait, they will usually present a good shot. EJ

RE: What deer gun caliber?
I guess I have to put the elk back I shot growing up. I didn't use a big enough gun. It fell down dead, minimal trailing, I shot through the heart and lungs on all of them. I live in Michigan now but was raised in Utah. I hunted with a .264 win mag but my brother had a .270 win. I had to have enough shells before we left home, he could get shells any where. Neither of us ever thought we were under gunned shooting what we had at elk. I know it's an article of faith pontificated by gun writers today one needs at leat a .30 06 to kill elk, but I didn't find this to be so. A .270 with 140 grain Fail Safes or 150 grain Partions or my favorite bullet, an Triple Shock in 140 grains would send the largest bull to the great beyond with no problem. If I hit it right with my 6.5 x 55 or my 7.62x54 the elk will fall down. If I don't hit it in the same place with a .338 win mag, I get to trail. What's the difference?

RE: What deer gun caliber?
Dr, I agree with you 100%. I shoot 6.5mmSwede>Norma 156gr "Alaska"
and don't need nothing more for deer to bull moose. |
RE: What deer gun caliber?
My first deer gun was a Savage 110 .243 but I sold it and got a remington 700 ADL synthetic .300 win mag

RE: What deer gun caliber?
If I were you I would buy the Savage chambered in 270-winchester. Use the scope that it comes with until you have more money to spend.
If you do hunt larger game years down the road? You can buy another rifle then. IHMO the 270-winchester is perfect for deer. The 270 will even work on elk.:) |
RE: What deer gun caliber?
Go with the 270 great round for any North American Big Game!!

RE: What deer gun caliber?
In my opinon, in your case, there isn't a reason i can think of to not buy the 30.06. The ammo is as cheap or cheaper, epsecailly for range shooting. It doesn't kick much harder than the .270. And you can use it for more game than the .270.
