Definately not the M16. Actually I would have to go with either the 96 or 98 Mauser.

If I had to go into combat today, I'd take the M16, but as far as best in it's day, I'd go with the M1 Garand.

For modern day I have to admit that I like the M-16 with the M-203 attachment. A well rounded set up that is!

Bolt action-the SMLE. Semi-auto, the M-14, which is truly an improvement over the M1!

Three service rifles that changed the world: Enfield 3-band musket, Enfield .303 (either SMLE & its offspring), and the Mauser 98. The service rifle with best publicity & promotion: M1 Garand (Hollywood made it famous). The most under rated service rifle: Soviet Mosin Nagant 91/30. The most feared service rifle/carbine/assault rifle: anything in 7.62x39 especially anything copying Comrade Kalashnikov.

My all time favorite (it saved my butt more than once): M16A1 & A2

The M-16 A1 has my vote.Because it is the reason I am here to vote.The M-14 ain't bad either.And everybody loves a Garand.

The AK-47, Thompson 45, and M1 were all great weapons. But if I were to choose one, it would be the M1 Carbine. This gun is plenty powerful for people out to 150 yds. and handles well for up close shooting as well.

I'd have to say that soldiers armed with an M1 Garand and a Colt 1911 are prepared for any situation.

I would go with the Garand except that its much more expensive and difficult to produce and has never been as in widespread use as the AK-47 and its variations.

While I do love the Garand, from the standpoint of US service arms, consider the single reason why the 03 Springfield was adopted was because the Krag's were outperformed in every aspect by the Mauser 98 in battlefield conditions. Then let's look at the 03 Springfield, funny it's a modified mauser.
