Leupold Scopes
I know this has been beat to death, but I cant dig up the past reports.
I am looking at a Leupold 2-7 x 33 scope for my rifle. The guy at Gander mountain tried to tell me that all the 2-7 x 33 are marked shotgun on the carton. I think this is a crock. If this is the case how do you k now what the paralex is set at? 1) Am I correct that their are 2 seperate scopes with the ONLY difference being the paralex? 2) How good of a scope is the old Vari-X II? 3) Any good web sights to get a good deal? Thanks for your help. |

RE: Leupold Scopes
I had a chance to look through the Leupold Vari-X II at dusk and moon light tonight. It is not even close the clarity and brightness I had with my Nikon Monarch. I hope the new VX II is better than the Vari-X II.
I also realized the shotgun model comes with the heavy duplex versus the regular of the rifle model. I am really going to lay into Gander Mountain when I return this thing for the line of BS they gave me saying the Shotgun and rifle model are the same. I also called Leupold Service and the guy I talked to was a real jerk. He did not want to give me any info at all. Not a good way to sway a potential customer. |
RE: Leupold Scopes
Upnorth, the new VX-II 2-7x33 comes in 75 yd. parallax and 150 yd. parallax. The 75 yd. is primarily for muzzleloaders and shotguns. I have a Knight DISC ML and I got the 150 yd. parallax for this inline. It really is a SWEET scope and in my opinion, it is perfect for my smokepole. If you want a great deal, go to the opticzone.com Jon will hook you up w/ a scope for a good price and he'll also answer any questions you have.

RE: Leupold Scopes
I own a number of Leupolds and the VarX-II 2x7 has been my problem child. It will not hold zero at all. Been back to Leupold 4 times and each time they replace the friction adjustments. When shooting the 308, I can actually see the adjustments move. I was at the point where I looked at other brands for the first time in my life. Are all Leupold that bad, no way but this one is a dog and their customer service isn't really making it right.
You are also correct about the Nikon. They are far superior in clarity and light gathering. Not entirely sure about their durability but they sure are a heck of a lot nice to hunt with in the late evening. |
RE: Leupold Scopes
I have seen them marked as shotgun scopes in calbela's.
BUT.... i have one on my rifles now and it shoots good like my vari-X II 3-9X40mm.i think they do that for other reasons. i would think a fixed 2.5X, 3X, 4X would be a better shotgun scope. portage... i have mine on my savage scout rifle in 308win it is the VX-II i have not had any of the problems you have. |
RE: Leupold Scopes
Quilly,
The 2x7 was my first Leupold. I ordered it from Midsouth Shooter's Supply in 1988. When it arrived, I could not even turn the adjustments. Midsouth told me to return it directly to the factory. Leupold replaced the adjustements and the scope worked fine for a couple of years. Their customer service was great and I had the scope back in about 2 weeks, While shooting several years ago, I noticed that the shots were wandering to the right after each shot. I'd adjust and it would be fine for a shot or so then wander again. I looked at the windage adjustment and noticed that it moved very easily and would move at each shot. A 308 is not a hard recoiling rifle by any stretch. It has been back 2 additional times for the same problem. 2 years ago the "problem" cost me a truly large buck as the windage moved during my drive to one of the areas I hunt. Just this weekend I wanted to adjust it again (switched back to 150 grain bullets) and noticed that I can barely move the adjustments again. Not necessarily a problem as long as it stays put but when do you stop trusting it. |

I tried "opticzone.com" but the sight could not be found. Just wondering if they changed their sight or do you know of any other good web sights for scopes. |
