RE: Which Gun for my son????????????????????
Hunter4,
Is your son Tall,Short,Heavy or Lite? How old is he? Does he handle the .30-30 good? Is he a good placement shooter? |
RE: Which Gun for my son????????????????????
The first centerfire for my 11 year old was a remy youth model 7 in 7mm-08. Then I got myself a tikka t-3 in 7 mag. After shooting this gun I quickly traded his in for another tikka t-3 in 7mm-08. It is a much nicer gun, light, great trigger, smooth action plus many other features. I would pick the tikka again. He loves it.

RE: Which Gun for my son????????????????????
As noted above, sort of depends on your son, his characteristics as to what he can handle, etc. How does he handle recoil, etc. I'd try to stay away from the magnums.
Take a look at rifles chambered to the 7x57, 270Win., 280Rem., or 308Win. Any of these will handle any mule deer or elk out to reasonable ranges. |

Hi Hunter:
You haven't provided too much information, but I would say go for the .300. Particularly with some of the "reduced recoil" ammunition on the market recoil should not be a problem, and your son will never outgrow it. Good luck. CE |
RE: Which Gun for my son????????????????????
i would look at the 7mm08,270,280, but the 30-06 would be the best choice if he can handle it

RE: Which Gun for my son????????????????????
My first rifle was a 30'06 springfield.....still works, still kills just like the energizer bunny. I have no use for any magnum except the 7 mag. The '06 has been going for over 100 years.....still going. Last count, I own 4 of them....2 sakos, 1 steyr and a Parker Hale......cool rifles. Because of advancing age, I hunt deer with my 7x57 now....low recoil....kind of a classic thing. :DRegards, Rick

RE: Which Gun for my son????????????????????
of the three choices you posted (7RemMag, 300 mag, 7mmwsm), I'd go with the 300 WinMag..... like was said earlier, you can load it up with reduced recoil cartridges (believe Remington loads them for the 300). Plus, it'll last him until he's an old man and will do him for pretty much anything he wants to hunt.
That being said... nothing wrong with your other two listings or even a 7mm-08, 308, or 30/06 if you opt out of the magnum range. |
RE: Which Gun for my son????????????????????
Hunter4life81 emailed me this info
He is going to be 15years old, he weights 110 and he is 5'4 I would stay away from the "Magnums". I'm thinking .308 :D |
RE: Which Gun for my son????????????????????
Jd, he's the perfect weight and size for the .308, but I prefer the 7mm-08.
IMO, I think It has a better penertation on game. Even the 6.5mmSwede. |
RE: Which Gun for my son????????????????????
The .260 Remington would be another good choice - a real "sleeper" of a caliber, with good penetration and mild recoil.
|
RE: Which Gun for my son????????????????????
308 or 7mm-08 would be fine for what he needs.
|
RE: Which Gun for my son????????????????????
I would vote .308. Cheap to plink, easy on the shoulder and very accurate to 300 yds.
|
RE: Which Gun for my son????????????????????
The 308 is probably better than the 30-06 because of his size. I shot a 30-06 at that age, but I was 6'2" and 200lbs when I was 15.

Grizzlyman, how old are you now!
Wow! that's what is meant buy a Growing Boy. |

I would stay away from the "Magnums". I'm thinking .308 |
RE: Which Gun for my son????????????????????
Ok well my son has shot my 300 win mag feather weight and he has no problem with it and he loves it. so the recoil isn't the problem. n to answer rebel hog's ? he handles that 30-30 quite well and but then agian that gun is pretty heavy tooo!!! I just want something for him that can take an elk down with no problem. And the 30-06 isn't the gun that is on my good list because i had i nice 6x6 buck get shot three times at 200yrds in the vital area and it never went down and i never found it.

RE: Which Gun for my son????????????????????
Just out of couriosity what type of bullets were you using, and what did they weigh? My father shot a big bodied bull 5 times before he went down with a 30-06. He was using 150 grain core lock bullets.[:@] I think a 30-06 will do a great job but you need to shoot a premium bullet! Of course that could be said of almost any caliber.

RE: Which Gun for my son????????????????????
I agree with the 308 Win. Excellent all around caliber for a young man. It will probably be his favorite when he becomes an adult.

RE: Which Gun for my son????????????????????
if the recoil doesnt bother him, get him a 300. He'll be able to hunt anything he wants until the day he dies and never be undergunned. It's a hard caliber not to love. the proof is in the performance. Recoil is the only drawback.
