loctite or somesuch for mounting scope?
My Weaver scope mount and rings recommends some sort of adhesive compound on the screws. So I went to Wally World and there are about 11ty million types. What do you recommend? And if Loctite, what kind of Loctite? Thanks.

RE: loctite or somesuch for mounting scope?
i have used the loctite. not the one that is permanent. it think it is the one in the blue tube.cause if you decide to take it off all you have to do is just un screw the screws.
i use it on my williams peep sight on my marlin 1895M in 450marlin and they stay on tight. also have used them on williams peep sights on my old rem 7600's and rem 7400. |

Most of the loc-tite I have seen is either Red,Blue, or Green.I am pretty sure you want to use the red.I think the green is there forever.

I've got a tube that's blue and it's red locktite inside. Don't use red fluid locktite ! It's permanate, you will never get the screws out ever. Use blue medium strength, it says it on the tube.

Rhetoric,
Loctite makes a thread locker for screws under 1/4" dia.. I think it's called 222MS. Rem. 222 |

DON'T USE RED. I REPEAT, NO RED. BLUE ONLY. Red is also pretty permiant.

I mount between 75 to 100 scopes a season for a local gunshop, use only Loctite Medium Strength (blue)or you'll be sorry if you ever want to remove the base for some reason...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

So I went with the nail polish, got the rings mounted on the Mossberg 695, and then realized that one of the rings was never drilled to recieve the screws to hold the scope in place. Aaaaaaargh. So then I decided to mount another scope on my Savage 99. Got the rings in place and then realized the scope (a World Class Compact) is too short for the rings. Double Aaaaaaargh. Curse that Murphy guy.

I've used the red Locktite on many guns with no problems. But it does help to use Acetone (finger nail polish remover) to losen the locktite if you need to loosen the screws.

Red Loctite (272) is used for bearing and stud mounting, Extreemly strong stuff. Blue Loctite (242) is for service removable with standard size screws 1/4-20 and above. There is a Purple loctite that is made for small screws, but the nunber escapes me. If you get a good grip with the blue you might strip the heads out on smaller screws. When using the red, touch the screw head with a pencil type soldering iron for a few minutes. Heat will cause the loctite to disintergrate, allowing you to remove the screws
