RE: Deer cartridge

I would take the 7mm-08 over the other three.

i think all three are good for deer. i think it comes down to more personal preferance that what is better.

but out of the three.. MY PERSONAL PREFERANCE is the 308win. a nice 150gr. bullet is ideal for me. even thought i would like to try the 260rem.

out of the 3 u picked i would choose the 260. it's right between the other 2 and the 260 has great sectional density.

cheers

I really don't think that it would be anything more than personnal choice but I would stay away from the .243 just because of the limited deer sized game bullets available. Other than that, anything under the sun should work.

Which 1 is better? The one you already own would the best one. If you don't own any of them and are trying to make up your mind I'd advise you to get the .308.
It is proven (not like others aren't) and ammo is cheapest and easiest to obtain. And if you handload you will always find the components cheaper, especially the brass.
I own a .308, a .243, and while I don't own a .260..... I do own both a few 6.5 x 55's and a 6.5 x 54 (both pretty close to the .260). I personally would prefer the .260, but I believe the .308 is a best buy.

Any of the three would be good on deer. So would about 30 other calibers between .24 and .30! If you don't want the recoil, the .243 up to the 7MM-08 would be good choices!

I have to agree with stubblejumper on the 7mm-08. It is the best of all three rolled into one cartridge. Any reason you left it off the list?

In addition to those mentioned, most of which are very good, I would also take a look at the .250 Savage and .257 Roberts.

i personally like the .308 because of the cheap plinking ammo to be had by the way of milsurp

Jack Conner makes the point that no cartridge is perfect if you can't find it anywhere. And the likelihood that you will run out/lose/forget your ammo is exponentially increased to the degree that you hunt an oddball cartridge. If you have a .308 you'll be able to buy ammo anywhere on the planet. Wally World and your McHunting store may have everything you need, but if you are hunting in the hinterlands, I hope your shooting something sensible.

I'm not familiar with the .260 at all. The .308 is a great cartridge for deer as well as black bear, moose and most anything else you are going to run across in North America. I understand a lot of folks like the .243 and consider it an outstanding deer cartridge.
I would personally pick the .308 for most of the same reasons already given by others. I expect though that all will do the job very well so you should factor in your personal preference and needs to make this decision.

JagMagMan-Why did you stop at .30 caliber? The 45-70 Government is what works best for me considering me and the conditions I hunt in. Think BIG man!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I think that either .260 or .308 would be all-around calibers for deer. In some situations the .243 might be a little light. Except in some long-range hunting (which I don't advocate) the trusty ole 30-30 works just find. But avoid the current obsessions for bigger magnum calibers...last time I checked there weren't any cape buffalo roaming U.S. hunting grounds.
