Default WSMs Vs SAUMs it looks like the WSMs are winning.

Remington is now chambering the 270 WSM and 300 WSM in their new SPS and XCR rifles. They are not even chambering the SAUMs in these rifles. What is up with that? I think Remington fell short by only developing the 7mm and 300 SAUMs when Winchester Created a whole family of short mags and they are not done yet.

Does anyone know if Reminton is going to phase out the SAUMs like they did with the 7mm Ultra mag?

It's really a shame because 2 of my friends own the 300 saum and are very impressed with them. I think they have been dropped already.

No remington wont phase out the 2. It takes awhile for them to do all the testing with different barrels, powders, bullets and all that good stuff in these new rifles. The SPS was a major screw up on their part but the XCR looks good. They both will probably be chambered in them later on.

The 7mm Ultra Mag hasen't been phased out, it's chambered in 3 different Remington guns for '05: the BDL, CDL, and the XCR. The Remington SAUM's are being offered in the Titanuim this year. This all according to the 05 catalog that I have.

Inwq all honesty why would anyone by a .300 RSAUM, 7MM RSAUM, when the .300 WSM or 7mm WSM is a better option, at least it is in my opinion.

I don't know why anyone would buy the 7mm ultra mag when you can only buy one factory load for it and it is a 140gr bullet. If they do that with the SAUMs then no one will buy them. I think the WSMs are a little better also.

When the 7mm ultra mag was made available in 2002 I believe, there were 2 factory rounds for it, 140 somethings, and 160 somethings made by Remington. I know a couple guys who have them and love them, of course they handload, and are getting some blazing speeds out of them, and also some tremendous recoil, all while burning close to 100 grains of powder. I was tempted to get one, buy bought a 7mm STW instead. Does just about all the ultra mag will do, with less kick and less powder. I already had a .280, and I personally didn't feel the short 7's will gain me anything noticable over that caliber, so I just decided to go really big. Mostly for fun shooting at the range though.

I was having the same debate in my head, should I get a wsm or saum--my mind was made up because of price, I recently bought 2-- the 7mm ultra mag (sako 75 ss) for 649.00 & Remington 700 300 saum for 459.00.
I believe the sako was a great deal & the remington a good one, In case they were phasing these out -- I pick up 12 boxes of remington 160 gr nosler partitions & 4 boxes of 175 gr partitions for the 7mm & 8 boxes of 180 gr partitions for the 300 saum, that should hold me for a while.

Remington made two mistakes with the SAUM's. First they got them out too late. By the time the .300 SAUM hit the market, the .300 and .270 WSM were already taking off like wildfire. Lots of people had already bought into the short mags with one and probably weren't going to bother trying a second different one in the same caliber. Secondly, when they did finally get the SAUM's on the shelf, their performance numbers are inferior to or barily match the WSM's. Winchester also made a good move by supporting the WSM's with good factory ammo selections right from the start, where the SAUM's were only offered by Remington in limited loads it seems. So being a day late and a dollar short, the SAUM's just could not win back the market share that had been gobbled up by the WSM's, and was doomed from the start. Remingtons real answer to the WSM's are the full length Ultra Mag line-up, being that they cater well to gun writers, chart-gazers and the performance-at-any-cost crowd and have been successful as such, perticularly with the .300 RUM. I was skeptical about the WSM's when they first came out, and vowed to not own one because I figured they were doomed from the start. Now that they have been going very strongly for a few years, I finally changed my mind and bought a .300 WSM. It's an impressive cartridge, expecially from the handloaders perspective. Excellent efficiency, economical to shoot (for a magnum), impressive velocity, the recoil won't loosen your teeth, and it's a breeze to handload for. I now think that the WSM's (possibly with the exception of the 7mm WSM) are in it for the long haul. I'm strongly considering a .270 WSM for a deer-only rifle and save the .300 WSM as a dedicated elk rifle, but I'm not sure yet. I plan on building myself a 7mm STW as my rifle project when I get out to gunsmithing school, and the .270 would be a bit redundant with a high performance 7mm in the safe as well. Oh, the possibilities!

Theres a lot of deals out there floating around for the SAUM's. Im thinking if you handload.....its worth a try. Hard to pass up some of the prices I have seen for those guns though.
