Gun Power

I am looking to purchase a new rifle. Currenently, I have a Marlin 30-30 but I would like to purchase a more powerful, but not too powerful, rifle. I was thinking maybe something like a .270 or .308 or 30-06 because they are mostly used in PA. But other guns like the 300 win mag or a win 338 mag I don't know much about. So if someone could tell me what guns are more powerful than others I'd appreciate it. Also, I mainly hunt whitetail but I would like a gun that I can use for bear and if I ever go on hunts out west. Thanks.

In order of "power" given those you noted:

30/30,
270Win.,
308Win.,
30-06,
300Win.Mag.,
338Win.Mag.

Some would argue about the 270 vs. 308Win., but I'd have to say the 308Win. has a little more "power" based upon larger caliber (.277" vs. .308"). If you want to argue
energy figures, well then it just depends on the particular loading.

For the uses you listed, and considering you may want to go west someday (assuming here you're thinking of elk/moose?), I'd recommend either the 30-06, or maybe a
7mmRem.Mag., but you didn't mention this one so I'd look to a 30-06.

You also mentioned bear, and here I'm guessing you're talking about black bear in PA.
If you want to consider brown/griz. in Alaska, then look to the 338Win.Mag.

I think the 30-06 Sprg. or a .300 Mag. would be a good all around rifle for big game. Good luck.

If you are going to stay in PA,
6.5mmSwed or .270Win is all you need.
Just select the right ammo.

Of the choises you posted for "your" purpose i'd pick the 30-06 or the 308 Win...

They will do everything you will want as long as you choose the right bullet for the game your hunting.
