My First Pistol
I finally got my permit. I guess the postcard got lost in the mail or so they say. I got a Ruger P97 and went to the range today. It shoots great!!!! For the price and quality(100% US made) I just love everything about it. I get good groups but I have never really shot before with a pistol. I have a hard time with the first shot if the hammer is down(double action) But that just means I have to shoot more to get better.:D

RE: My First Pistol
My first pistol was a Magnum Research baby eagle in .40 S&W
It would do 3" at 25yd all day. The grips were perfect and it looked great! I bought it with my own money at the age of 16 or 17 but it was in my dads name. I had intended on getting into stuff like IDPA and stuff like that but I never did. Man I miss that gun....... |
RE: My First Pistol
Congratulations. My first was a Smith and Wesson model 67 Combat Masterpiece. I thought I was something else. I wish I still had it today. Enjoy your purchase.

RE: My First Pistol
Congratulations!! My first handgun was a Browning Highpower 9mm Luger. Good luck.

RE: My First Pistol
Mine was also a BHP 9mm Luger that I bought in 1967.

RE: My First Pistol
my first was a Charter arms Target Bulldog in 357 magnum 4" barrel adjustable sights, i picked it up used for $90, just couldnt pass up a 357 for 90 dollars ( even though i didnt like the fact its a 5 shot cylinder, not 6 like most revolvers) it appeared in almost new condition the only thing wrong with it, it had some holster wear on the end of the barrel other then that its a sound firearm and holds 2 to 3 inch groups at 25 yards. I know alot of people look at charter arms as cheapo guns like a hi point. But I have been more then happy with it and feel i got more then my 90 dollars worth from it. Ive killed a deer with it using some hot handloads pushing a 158 grain Hornady XTP at 1322 fps according to a 3 shot average through a chronograph. I like to take it squirrel hunting using light loaded 38's, now days since i moved to Arizona i mainly use it for a trail pistol loaded with snake shot loads.

RE: My First Pistol
BG,
I believe it is a buyers permit. They require those in Michigan. It is a complete f_ucking hassle. You have to go to the police station during work hours, take a test, get finger printed and they give you a permit. Then you take the permit to the gun dealer, then there is the 7 day wait, then you take the firearm and permit back to the police station (during work hours of course) for a safety inspection. Tom |
RE: My First Pistol

Here in onondaga county you have to pay $10.00 for an application and then pay $25.00 for a safty course. Then after you fill it out with 4 referances(no family or people who reside with you) you make an appointment to turn it in and get finger printed 4 times plus a thumb print on you permit with a photo. That cost $36.00 county fee and $99.00 fee for the FBI to run your finger prints. They tell you it can take up to 6 months and say not to call untill that 6 months is up. I waited 4 months and then called when they told me I was approved. They also said that they sent out the post card telling me I was approved but it was lost in the mail I guess. Then you go to the Sheriff's office to pick your permit up. When you buy a pistol you have to pay for it and take a bill of sale with a bill for a trigger lock also to the Sheriff's office where they type it on you permit and then give you a coupon that you take back to the seller who then lets you take your pistol home. Long process but It is worth it.

RE: My First Pistol
when i lived in missouri, to buy a handgun you had to go to the court house fill out few papers maked a 10 dollar donation to the county and then wait for the sheriff to sign your permit, then you take the permit back to the FFL dealer and get your gun, also private sales between individuals is a felony so you had to buy your guns from a dealer.
Here in arizona its awesome, you go to the gun store pick out what you want fill out a 4473 form and as soon as the phone call for the background check is done, you get to leave with the gun. same process for both long guns and handguns here in arizona also private sales on handguns are also legal. Arizona is a gun owners paradise A buddy of mine a few months back got a nice christmas bonus and bought 7 handguns in one day. Arizona is Grrrrrrreat!!! |
RE: My First Pistol
My first pistol was a S&W Model 39 (9mm) that I traded for in 1983. That pistol accompanied me several places when I was in uniform and saved my life once.

Here in Florida to buy a gun ,fill out the 4473 and they make a call in.There is a waiting period on handguns but I'm not sure how long it is.Since I have my CCW I'm exempt from waiting periods.I still have to have the rediculious call in though. RE: My First Pistol
Your choice of the Ruger P-97 was a very good one. They are American made. They are not the best looking gun around but for pure defense I would pick the Ruger over anything else I ever tried and I tried darn near all of them. For the MONEY Nothing can compare. It will never fail you.
