load....
my friend taught me to reload some 30.06 today...we bought sierra game king 165 grain hollow point boat tails...we loaded it behind 48.5 grs of 4640(or somthing to that extentent..) the load is the accuracy load in the book...should that load be accurate? will the bullets perform well on deer? thanx...

RE: load....
i really dont intend on shooting targets with them..plan to sight my gun in shoot 11 rounds and save the other 20 for deer season....i dont see why they cant be used for target shooting....hpbt's are what snipers use from what ive read...and im sure they practice with that load because they probally get a load worked up for each rifle and use it to shoot at all times after they find the one....i really dont see why you cant target shoot with them though?...and i took a doe with a hpbt(no the game kings thats why i asked to see if they perform well...)and the entrance was no noticable...blew the lungs to complete mush..andmad the doe do a flip in the air...its legs were on the other side from the way it fell..it fell away from me but did a flip so the legs faced away from me after the flip......and the exit was about the size of my finger...that was a perfect round...but in 308..now i shoot 3006....does anyone know why if at all they cant be used to shot targets? my friend that taught me thats all he shoots and he shoots about 2 boxes a month and 4 the month before deer season and he never had a problem shooting targets....so i duno...tell me if i cant shoot targets with them...and how will they perform on deer?
thanx mauser06 |
RE: load....
There is no way to predict which bullets be be accurate in a specific gun. These bullets may have been the accuracy load in the manual but that does not mean they will be accurate in your gun.The only way to find out is to try them.I am hoping you are starting with a reduced load and working up watching for pressure signs as you go.To just pick a higher end load from a manual and load it is a foolish practise that could have very undesireable results.

RE: load....
in the above post i was implying that hpbt's should only be used for target shooting and not actuall hunting. i just went to the sierra website and it turns out i got the gameking hpbt's and the matchking hpbt's mixed up. u should be perfectly fine shooting at paper or meat with that bullet as long as it's the gameking and not the matchking.

RE: load....
i am pretty sure they are gamekings....and i will be shooting them through my mauser 98k..i could probally load it to the very max and be fine...this loads pressure wasnt the highest in the book...and my friend shoots it from him remington 760 pump gun...so if that action if fine a bolt shouldnt have a problem...i hope my gun likes em! and why arent u suppost to hunt with some hpbts for? because of the way the "blow up" as ive heard it called...i didnt have that problem when i took my first doe...hopefully these work just as good....

RE: load....
Pressures listed in the manual are for the test gun not yours. As barrels and chambers vary a great deal pressures can also vary. The same load could make a great deal less pressure in you friends pump gun because of these differences in chamber and barrel.Loads should always be worked up reguardless of the action type you are using.

RE: load....
Prairie Boy, IF they are Sierras, the 165 HPBT's are hunting bullets. The 168 grainers are target bullets. The 165's are pretty good deer bulllets, but a little on the soft side for elk. mauser06, there's no way to tell if your loads will be accurate in YOUR GUN without firing some of them at a target to see what they'll do.

RE: load....
i relize that accuracy varies i was wondering what results some of you had using this load....i will shoot them and sight it in and see myself but until then i was wondering....the doe i took with hpbts were 168 grain hornady match bullets....they droped her where she stood...maybe it was just placement...i do see the diffrence...the 168s barely have a hollow point....the 165s i have now are more opened..maybe for better expansion for hunting uses....

RE: load....
A friend of mine used them on a mule deer once he hit it in the shoulder and the bullet disintegrated; he landed up shooting it in the ribs a few times and it finaly died. Good luck.
