.22 mag

I just bought a second hand Marlin 872 .22 mag for shooting bunnies. The barrel is in great condition, so is the stock. Can you tell me a bit about this gun and also the ballistics of the caliber, what accurasy I can expect at 50m, 100m ect using Winchester Super X ammo and also at what distance I should zero the scope at.
Thanks Guys

22mag. is a great little gun for bunnies if you take head shots. otherwise you will loss a lot of meat.
sight the scope dead at 25 yards, anywhere you see a bunnie, just put it on the head and shoot.
Works great for varmits too. not to expensive to shoot,so just have fun and check out different ranges.

I am not a hunter I am a whitetail population reduction specialest

remember keep your back to the sun, your knife sharp, and your powder dry.

Try different kinds of ammo. I've shot a bunch and the best in my marlin is cci maxi-mag hp 40gr. I have an h&r that likes pmc. so you need to check a number of loads. 3/4" groups at 50yrds is realistic. You may get better than that.

The .22 mag is a great little round. The winchester .40 gr hp's and fmj's are published at 1910fps, the winchester supreme 34 gr hp is 2110 fps. My marlin loves the jhp. I'm comfortable out to around 150 yards.

You can't eat what you miss!

Thanks alot guys. I have tried different ammo and it seems to like the Super X's best. I did a bit of experimenting, and have zero'd the scope at 80 yards. At 50 yards Im hitting 2 inches highand at 125 Im hitting about 1-2 inch groups,2-3 inches low. I actually live in Australia, and have been told that I could cleanly kill a feral goat with this caliber. What do you guys think?

my chrony results for various 22 mag shells.dynamit noble 40 grain soft points high 1911,low 1834 average 1877.insadently these were 20 bucks a box and didn't group nearly like i thought they would,2 inchs @100 yards.winchester 34 grain soft point,hi-2110,low-2107,average-2102 these grouped 1 to 1 1/2 inches @100 yards.winchester supremes(high volocity)34 grain hollow points.high-2045,low-2019,average2028.as you can see theses were acualy slightly slower then the standard winchesters,go figure.these grouped about the same.winchester super X.high-1745,low-1709,average-1760.these grouped around 1 inch groups @100 yards.i guess my rifle likes slower volocity.CCI maxi mag,high-1781,low-1735,average-1760.CCI maxi mag 5,high-2334,low-2131,average-2241.niether of the CCI's grouped very well in my mag but as you can see theres a big difference in volocity.the 22 mag is a great little round but don't expect 1 hole groups with any shells.some times inconcistancies between shells is great and is deffinetly wide between lot numbers.if you find one that shoots good, try to match lot numbers between boxes and you will be much better off.
