RE: .Help me choose please...
Leupold first choice. If you want to spend less $$$ don't overlook the new Bushnell Elite series. gg.

RE: .Help me choose please...
Leupold! But I'll also go along with the Bushnell Elites. I've used a couple of them lately and I've been very happy with their performance.
|
RE: .Help me choose please...
The bushnell elite is probably the best buy for the money.
|
RE: .Help me choose please...
Leupold
|
RE: .Help me choose please...
Leupold is my fav. The Redfield has less eye relief.

RE: .Help me choose please...
leupold....ive had experience with redfield but the others i havet...i hear they are all pretty good...also the redfield was an older on before they switch companys(i think it was redfield that did that...) i love my leupold so far...

RE: .Help me choose please...
I have both a vari-x II and a nikon monarch ucc. Both are good scopes but the nikon has much better glass. The weaver grand slam is in your price range and they're pretty good too.

RE: .Help me choose please...
Leupold Varix III
But for the cash you mention I would say look long and hard at the Bushnell Elite Series. (IMO the best scope in their price range, I have a couple and been very impressed) They have a Lifetime Warranty and I know of a guy who damaged his Elite(by his own fault) and Bushnell had a new scope in his hands in 4 weeks no questions asked, so it would seem they have good CS and after sale support) |
RE: .Help me choose please...
Leupold....................You can get a pretty good deal on Ebay if $ is a concern.

RE: .Help me choose please...
Leupold.

RE: .Help me choose please...
ridgerunner-so you've had them all.Does that include swarovski, ziess or schmidt&bender?I thought leupold was the best too until I tried ziess and swarovski. Now all of my hunting rifles have swarovski's mounted on them. For $300 more they are clearer and much brighter than the vari xiii's.If your budget is smaller the ziess conquest is in the same price range as the vari xiii only it is clearer and brighter. In the cheaper scopes the bushnell elite 3200 is brighter than the varix ii and cheaper as well.I was like many other people in that when I needed a new scope I just went out and bought a leupold. The truth is leupold has not improved their scopes and the other manufacturers have caught up in the last few years.Leupolds prices are now higher than any other except the european scopes and the gap is closing with them as well.I am glad I decided to check out the competition and it appears many other people are as well.Leupold still makes a good product but it is no longer the best available and unless leupold makes improvements or cuts prices they will be losing more and more of the market to the competition.

RE: .Help me choose please...
I agree whole heartedly with you stubblejumper! I just bought a mod 70 and when searching for my glass I found the Conquest and was more impressed with it than anything else. And to my surprise, when I asked for Leupolds, not many stores had them in stock. They said that the Zeiss line has become such a competitive scope that there Golden Ring scopes sales have almost totally dropped off. And the guy I spoke with at McCoy's said that Leupold has really let their success go to their heads'. According to him, most manufacturers raise their prices 2-3% a year whereas Leupold sets theirs about 6-7% higher every year.
I have been EXTREMELY happy with my Conquest and I don't really see any rifle in the future wearing anything less. I would highly recommend anybody that is interested in a Leupold Vari X III to look at the Zeiss line of scopes. They may be a little bit more but I definitely feel that they have better glass and better features for the money. But even if you don't want a Zeiss, the key is to get what you want and don't settle for less or you will be unhappy with it forever! I went that route with a Savage and a Simmons. Compare that to a Winchester and a Zeiss. You do the math! "Clutz by Nature, Hospitalized by Fate..." Pyral |

RE: .Help me choose please...
You make mention of buying a new one. If your buying used there is only one choice Leupold. The warranty is bullet proof.
Otherwise the Bushnell Elite's are hard to beat, if buying new. Good luck, we've all been there. |
RE: .Help me choose please...
Leupold VX II...and then a close second the Nikon Monarch series...Leupold because it has the best warranty, customer service and the best recoil proof..size and weight dimensions of any scope out there. Optically the Monarch may be a little better but have never dealt with Nikon customer service. As far as Bushnell scopes go I have had 2 one a B&L and another a mid range model that came with a used gun I bought but was otherwise brand new. That one succumbed to the recoil of the mighty 308 winchester, they aren't a suitable scope not with 3" of eye relief and look at the size and weight specs.

RE: .Help me choose please...
Nikon! Leupold can't touch them when it come to the quality of the optics, clearity, and light transmission. Sorry, Leupold lovers, but it's the truth.

RE: .Help me choose please...
Stubble, I have owned/own the 2 german scopes and 1 austrian scope you mentioned both in 30mm and 1" tube diameters and spent an awful lot of money on them thinking the way you do . Did I kill more animals because I spent 1000+dollars for a scope ... the answer is no. Is their customer service better than leupold I seriously doubt it especially if they ever sell as many scopes as Leupold sells. There are Many gunmakers out there that have more experience on this subject than you and I combined who pick Leupold so they can't be as bad as you make them out to be. Getting back to the subject of scopes in the 250 dollar range his choices are leupold and Nikon but since this country needs to keep its corporations rolling i pick Leupold. Screw the European manufacturers.

RE: .Help me choose please...
Oldelkhunter-If you read my post I said leupold made a good product.I also said they were overpriced and I still stand by that.I don't care who make the scopes I use only that I get the best product for my money. In my opinion that is not leupold. If you want to talk gunbuilders talk kenny jarret-he recommends leupold as his second choice after swarovski. As far as buying local are you aware that leupold imports their lenses from japan?I find that the swarovski scopes I use add a few minutes to my hunting time at both first and last light due to their superior brightness. That may or may not help me harvest more or bigger trophies but I will have those few minutes either way.

RE: .Help me choose please...
Stubble...Kenny Who? he is bought and paid for by Swarovski what do you think he would say, he is a Swarovski dealer...Talk to David Miller and D'arcy Echols(independent gun makers) and ask them what they personally use or mount for their clients on rifles that run 6000 dollars -to home mortgage size. Leupold does not make their own lenses they are bought from numerous sources Japan or wherever but have to maintain a certain quality. The Mantra you are chanting is synonomous with what every Swarovski dealer will tell you. European manufacturers still design their scopes with European hunters in mind who shoot deer and other assorted animals in the Dark. I have never had to turn down a shot at an animal because i had a Leupold scope on my rifle is my point.

RE: .Help me choose please...
...Thanks gang,If and when i (buy)sorry Leupold. went out and looked at the Vari-x-III just did not turn me on..My scope will be (NIKON)Monark..heck i dont care where there made, the shop let me take them all outside the store, sighting from 50 yards-300 yards just before dark..Monark first joice..Nikon Buckmaster second joice..i choose this not to save money, but how much light they gathered and clarity..
:)... ..JESUS IS COMING BACK BE READY... |
RE: .Help me choose please...
For deer hunting in PA, I like the Leupold VX-II 3-9x40mm, does everything I need.
|
RE: .Help me choose please...
oldelkhunter-In case you weren't aware of it jarret is also a leupold dealer.I am not quoting you anything any dealer has told me but rather telling you what I have observed myself by personally using leupold, ziess and swarovski scopes while actually hunting. If the european scopes are only designed for european conditions why do you suppose they have one inch tubes and are called the american line by swarovski.I have been hunting in conditions where extra brightness was an advantage and it was during legal hours where I hunt in alberta.

RE: .Help me choose please...
Stubble...He(Jarrett) is plastered all over Swarovski advertisements in the popular magazines...His website pushes them. The move to the 1" tube by the German/Austrian manufacturers has come just in the past few years prior to that it was all 30 mm. Heck I have used and so have plenty of people that I know use the 30mm Schmidt& Bender,Swarovski and Zeiss and they are well satisfied with them but for the average hunter they would be served with something that is not the size of a small spotting scope sitting on their rifle. The swarovski scope you have is a gem a real great scope has excellent length, weight is just right but it is real pricey and the thing i don't like about it is eye relief. I have a hard time justifying something that costs almost 2x as much as a Vari-xIII which have never let me down. I usually buy scopes for a rifle 2 at a time for backup and that can get expensive if dealing with Swarovskis. I have 2 high end gun shops that I go to around here and they both handle Swarovski scopes and binos, the salespeople in these stores continuosly bad mouth Leupolds.
|
RE: .Help me choose please...
Oldelkhunter-In canada a vari x iii 3.5x10x50 sells for just under $900 canadian. The going price for the 3x10x42 a-line swarovski's that I use runs $1150 canadian for a difference of less than $300 canadian.I have one mounted on my 300 ultramag and find it has plenty of eye relief.I have an old 3x9x36 swarovski on my 338x8mm rem mag that is twelve years old so the one inch scopes have been around for more than a few years.
|
RE: .Help me choose please...
There's an article in this month's Field and Stream that mentions that independent tests have shown that Leupold scopes are as clear as any European scopes. Although it doesn't say theses independent testers were.
|
RE: .Help me choose please...
It's easy to talk about tests if you don't have to show who did them or what criteria they used in performing them.I go on what I see for myself as after all I am the one that will be using the product.
|
RE: .Help me choose please...
Now DIYJ98 don't go that far ...Leupolds are great scopes for the money but the Swarovski..Schmidt are a couple of notches better.. The Zeiss conquest series I question .. new product and lots of rumours about returns on them and where there is smoke .... I had the 3x9 diavari and wasn't real impressed with it and it costs more than the current scopes in the Conquest line. My only gripe with them(german and austrian) is the dollar difference vs performance gained and the eye relief issue. Optically they are in a class by themselves. Stubble I am looking at 440 bucks for a 2.5x8x36 Varix III vs 739 for a 3x10x42 Swarovski.
