280 Rem.
Looking for thoughts on a 280 rem. Have an opportunity to pick up one for a good price, it is a custom gun, 700 BDL Deluxe.
Whats your thought on this caliber? Mostly used for deer, but maybe moose or elk. I have already a 270 win and was looking adding a 7mm , maybe a 300 win and then this came along. What about factory ammo? The guy that owns it shoots only 140 Ballistic Tips hand loaded. He suggested not to use factory ammo in the 280. Is their a reason? I eventually want to reload, but not for a while, so I need to use over the counter for now. Thanks Edited by - Skeeter 7mm on 09/13/2002 22:02:21 |

RE: 280 Rem.
If you already have a 270, skip the 280. Only minor advantage comes with bullets over 150 grs.Go for the 300 Win Mag to avoid having too much overlap in cartridge and a 180/308 at 3100 is a good jump in energy from a 150/277 at 2900.The 280 is too close.But....if it'a a heck of deal grab it. You can probably trade it straight up for a good 300 Win/Wtby Mag someday. Some guys will walk over hot coals for a 280.A buddy of mine never misses a chance to remind of how much better his 280 is over my 270. I just smile, grab my 7 Rem Mag and put a 140 over the chrony at 3300+ and smile some more when his 280 clocks about 2950.Our 300 Win Mags both do 3100 with a 180,lotsa smiling there.

RE: 280 Rem.
Skeeter--if there is anything I have noticed about 280's it is their inherent accuracy. They are not finicky about loads. In a 24" barrel with a 160 partition I get 2875-2900 with remington brass..imr7828 and a federal 210 primer ...I ran a 7 Rem mag federal 160 partition factory load thru the chronograph in a brand new BAR and it went 2895, now that made me sick. Now I have limited experience loading both rounds in lighter grain bullets and am not qualified to speak on it but it seems the 140-150 grain bullets in a 280 top off about 2900-295o with exception of the federal HE load 140TBBC which clocks about 3100. So in the lighter bullets it is comparable to a 270 but I think it is more accurate.

RE: 280 Rem.
I know it is abit reduntant to my 270, thus my concern. I know a couple guys who own them and think they are all a guy would ever need where we hunt...however they always complain obout shell selection off the shelf. I know the 280 is a flat shooter and a step up form my 270 but justn't can't decide. Now I have a real dilemma, I have located a Browning A-bolt chambered in a 3006 that is nice and fits me. I know the 06 is probably the most versitile cal out there, but I haven't even consider it...UNTIL NOW. I know it is no blazer on the chrono but it should do just nicely. I hunt mostly wt's, but moose and elk as well. Orginally I was thinking 7mm mag all the way, but since I can't find one around, switched to 300 win. Then these 2 guns show up and I am now leaning towards the 3006. (I want a good all arounder with good accuracy and it must fit me, which they all do)
I have shot a 300 Win & 300Wtby but can't remeber how she bangs a guy. Any thoughts on the recoil? (I have a bad left shoulder and really don't want to flinch b/c I am scared of hurting my wing!) What do you guys think? Of my choices 280, 3006 or 300 win what would you do? My real problem is god blessed me with left eye domiance, so my choices are limited. |

RE: 280 Rem.
In all honesty the 280 is too close to the 270.I would go for a 300 win mag but if rcoil is a problem the 7mm mag would be a logical choice. It has a good increase in power over the 270 but recoil is noticeably less than the 300.

RE: 280 Rem.
Greg, the 300wsm only comes in rh models right now. While I probably can get a custom, I am on a bit of a budget so I like to keep it around a grand CDN.
SJ, I was 7mm all the way, one huge problem I can't get one...nor order one in time for season in left. I have a grand choice of 280, 3006 or 300 win. In my mind the 280 is out, like you said only a slight advantage over my 270 and I really wanted some more choice in bullets and umf! I can't remember what the 300 recoil is like. Is it way more than a 7MM? Would it kick more than my 50 cal ML? Being left I can't just buy it and sell that easy. So I have to make sure I make a good choice for me and my wing. Anybody? |

Skeeter7mm-Where are you shopping that you can't get a 7mm mag?Have you tried wholesale sports, russells sports, farmers supply or a smaller dealer such as bashaw sports in bashaw alberta.

RE: 280 Rem.
SJ, I have tried Wholesale Sports, local gun shops, etc. No left 7mm other than Tikka base model, which does not fit me worth a hoot. In fact one shop has had one order since last nov. from Browning. I also tried Browning Canada....no can do in 7MM. 300 Win not a problem! Again my real problem is being left, they only make so many and shops stock one in each Caliber/maybe 2. Some shops say, if you can believe this that the 7mm isn't a real desired caliber...common on! Anyways, it has been tough and what I have found is what I posted. The 280 is a private deal. Probably the best thing is to stick with 270 till I can find a 7mm that works.
SJ, with the new gun crap in Canada what is the process if I find one in a different Province, like Alberta? Is it a red taped nightmare? With this PAL how would they know who I am or if I am actually buying it. You know the Pic ID and all. Do you or any other canucks know. I have heard some stuff, but it could be the local shops don't want to lose any biz. They say they can't transfer stock between different shops. (Wholesale of course can do in store transfers from one local to another) I looked at the Recoil table and the 300 win is a bit of jump but not much more than a 7mm, which I have shot plenty (with no problems). So I should be ok with the 300 win. However the 3006 is still heavy in my mind, it is lacking the speed that the 7MM or 300 will produce but it should be pretty decent. NO? Still lost and p'd at being a south paw right now!!!! |
RE: 280 Rem.
I love the 280 Rem. as a cartridge and feel that it's one of the best rounds there is, but since you already own a 270 Win. I'd pass on buying it. It's so close to what you alredy have.

RE: 280 Rem.
skeeter 7mm...
i have owned (2) rem 7600's in 280rem. i for a time all i talked about on the this forum was get a 280rem one of the best rounds out there. a very close buddy of mine took a elk at 300yds. using TBBC's and he dropped after a few steps. he has it on video. as for your buddies not being able to find a ample amount and types of ammo for it. just do what i do " buy in bulk " both of mine shot core-lokt's and nosler partition's. as for the browning in 30-06sprg. i own one now and i never had a rifle get these groups out of a gun before. the 30-06sprg would be a better choice for where you hunt and get the same distance out of 280rem and the 30-06sprg ballistics are minimal. it comes down to practice, practice, preactice !!!!!!!! so both are excellent rounds. i don't reload either and there are seceral good bullets and sizes that winchester and federal make for the 280rem up to 160gr's. |
RE: 280 Rem.
Skeeter7mm-As long as you are buying in canada there is no problem buying from another province. It is all done by phone and all you do is give your pal number and the gun is registered to you buy the store selling it.I have done this several times and it is quite easy.As far as the 7mm mag Most of my friends use it as their only hunting cartridge and are very happy with it.They have taken everything from deer to pronghorn to moose and elk and it does a great job.I myself use the 7mmstw for my deer ,pronghorn and bighorn hunting which is really a 7mm mag but about 200 to 300fps faster.

RE: 280 Rem.
Guys the stars lined up today. I got a call from a shop and I have a LH 7MM Mag. I got exactly what I wanted. Thanks to your posts and suggestions. I really don't know that a perfect caliber will exist across the board, but to me the 7 is all I wanted or need!!
