What is the highest grain for the 243 that you guys know of.
|
RE: .243
105 grain is the highest I know of.
|
RE: .243
Do u know what company makes that?
|
RE: .243
Speer makes one. Most 105 grain bullets are more for target shooting than hunting. I believe Sierra makes one too. If you can't get it killed with a 100 grain bullet 5 more grains ain't gonna help.
|
RE: .243
Speer did make a 105 grain round nose which I didn't like as it seemed eager to shed cores. Maybe the hot cores are different.
|
RE: .243
You really need to say for what purpose.....for deer the 100 grain is about max but there's afew target bullets (VLD) that are much heavier.
Search and look at Sierra bullets and Berger as well..... |
RE: .243
Nosler and speer make a 107 Grain bullet. i think Barns does too. If your looking for a Hunting bullet, use a sierra 100gr Game king BTSP
Or the nosler Balistic tip in 95gr. I also use the hornady 100Gr BTSP to hunt. That 100gr bullet with 3000fps FLAT shooting velosity will take down any game in north america out to 250 yards. Except a moose or Grizz bear. Harry |
RE: .243
Dont forget the 115 gr Barnes. Although I have yet to hear anyone say it groups worth a hoot.

RE: .243
I use it for whitetail deer, the reason i was asking was because i heard of some guy using 85 grain for deer. i thought i would give it a try, well i shot the deer in the chest and it acted like it was just a bee sting, well anyway i was thinking of gowing on a good grain size for deer
|
RE: .243
W.T.H.,
WAS THIS WHITETAIL FACING YOU AND YOU SHOT HIM IN THE BRISKET? I'VE HAD MY SON HUNTING WITH A 243 FOR YEARS. EVERY DEER THAT HE'S SHOT WENT DOWN LIKE A STONE. 85 GR SHOULD BE ENOUGH, ALTHOUGH I'D USE 100'S GIVEN A CHOICE. SOMETIMES A BRISKET SHOT WITH A HIGH VELOCITY CARTRIDGE WILL GO RIGHT THROUGH AND MISS VITALS IF THE SHOT IS CLOSE RANGE(WITHIN 100YDS) |
RE: .243
Win 100gr SXPP, developed for deer.
I would try shooting in the neck or head. A 22lr will drop a 2000lb Bovine where it stands. When shot in the forehead at close range! |
RE: .243
Hmm...maybe I should rebarrel my 243. Im not much of a varmint shooter...I only hunt deer. What kind of twist rate would it take to do the heavier bullets?
|
RE: .243
Swampman, no the deer was standing broadside and i shot it in the chest very close to the neck
|
RE: .243
If your 243 is a 1 in ten like most are, that twist will shoot the heaviest bullets available in that caliber very well. Mine will shoot the 105 grain bullets with that twist. The 100 grain Hornady round nose performs very well on deer as long as the range is kept to 200 yards or so. Its not as effective as the spire points at long range . I had very good service from my 6MM Rem with the 100 gr RN. It had a slow twist and would not stabalize the 100 grain Spire Points. It was one of the early ones. 1 in 12 twist.

RE: .243
I have shot 7 deer with ballist tip 95 gr 5 drop where they were the last 2 ran less than 30 yards I drop 1 at 175 yards did not move!
|
RE: .243
I have not tried the Ballistic tip in the 243 as yet. Right now I am loading the 85 grain Barnes Coated X bullets. I haqve yet to try them on game.
