RE: .30-378 wby mag- How good is it??

Red,
You are right. I haven't any experience with a 30/378 or the Warbird. I have had experience with a .300 weatherby vs a .308 win vs a 6.5x55 and I see no advantage at the ranges I shoot game animals. If I hit a deer or pronghorn with a bullet from any of these guns in the boiler the deer, or what ever, falls down within 40 yards. I have seen a deer shot with a .300 RUM at 200 yards and the deer went about 25 yards. About what I would expect if I had shot it with any other caliber. If you hunt at extreme ranges, which is your perogative, this is where these calibers shine. If someone wants to buy one, great. Keep the economy churning. I just don't see the advantage at normal ranges.

Since velocity is all that matters anymore I quess you could say that the 30-378 is 100 fps gooder than than the 300 ULM which is 100 fps gooder than the 300 Weatherby which is 100 fps gooder than the 300 Win Mag which is 150-200 fps gooder than the 30-06. Of course one can over load these past recommended data and make them even a little gooder yet. It comes down to how gooder you need to do the job. And of course how many after market things you want to add to make them any fun to shoot.

I have a Ruger No. 1, K1-B-BBZ that I had rebarreled to a 30-378 with a Krieger barrel 0.825 muzzle, crowned at 30", 1:12 twist and a Vais break. The gun weighs around 14 lbs. with scope and Sims recoil pad. It has recoil about the same as a 25-06 rem. It will shot 0.225" groups @ 100 yds. with factory Weatherby 165 gr. Nosler's at 3675 fps. and 0.450" groups @ 100 yds. with custom loads of 150 gr. Barnes XLC's at 3985 fps.

Red, you make some very good points and though we tend to disagree on bullet diameter, range and such I will not squable with you on this!!!! Recoil is a thing that is directly related to energy and has nothing to do with velosity. If you get .416 Rigby energy then you have .416 Rigby recoil. Rifle weight will slow down the recoil impulse but it is still there. Most big bores weigh in at 10 pounds pluss where some of the hyper velosity needle blowers like the hot 7mms and .308s tend to be a bit on the light side.
I have built and shot several .30/378s all were in the 10 pound + class and though off the bench shooting lots of rounds they got old quick for the one or two shots fired hunting they would be fine.
Though the hypermags are not for me if you want one get it and have fun!!!! However learn to shoot it!!! No rifle of any power makes up for poos shooting!

Be prepared to replace the barrel in as little as 400 shots fired. You will likley start to see throat erosion in about 100 shots and it will begin to get severe in about 200 rounds. When you burn that much powder in such a small bore and at such high pressures your barrel goes away very very very quickly.

By thetime you get it sighted in and have pracitced with it a little bit your barrel begins to go to crap.

I would recommend ear plugs and ear muffs both with that rifle. They are very loud and very harsh to shoot. I guess that's a good thing given the short barrel life. They are, however, pretty spectacular when it comes to shooting game at long range. I had one - got rid of it. Too much of a good thing.
