30-30...

I am a beggining deer hunter and I was wondering if a 30-30 would take a deer down without me having to track it far...PLEASE RESPOND IF YOU READ THIS POST.

P.S. I am an excellent shot at far yardage.

Centerfire:
Buy the Marlin 336 30-30 , One of the best deer rifles out there go to Budsgunshop.com Theres a new one in there for $350.00 I think it might even be stainless, They charge $25 shipping, So for under $400.00 Bucks you have a Fantastis Deer rifle......

Were you plannin' on huntin' in close country, or somethin' more open? The .30-30 is pretty hard to hit with beyond 200 yards.

Well, centerfire yes a 30-30 is very capable of taking an elk however your distance is very limited. WHat season and what unit you hunting seems you need some help well, i live close by in brighton and would not mind helping you out. I have a .300 you can shoot if you like before you run right out and buy a RUM. I would advise against hunting elk with a 30-30.

Well there is an incredable amount of open country in Colorado east of Denver, also in parks and basins in the mountains. So, without knowing you only hunt in black timber I'd advise something else. I like the .260 Rem, but there are plenty of cartridges that use bigger bullets, that just might give you greater confidence on an elk hunt.
