Boss and Recoil Question

I'm in the process of helping my girlfriend pick out a deer rifle. We've been looking at the A-bolt Medallions. I would like to get her a .243, but the problem is that she is left handed, and I don't see where they made a .243 in LH, only .243 WSSM in LH. I did see where they do have a .270 in LH with BOSS. My question is with the BOSS would this keep the recoil down on the .270 to where it's close to that of a .243? I know the BOSS is designed for other reasons other than recoil, but recoil is the main issue right now. Thanks for the help.

RE: Boss and Recoil Question

KShunter, Browning does offer a 243win in Micro Medallion in a lefthanded action. Yes the BOSS will reduce the recoil but it also is LOUD and must never be shot without ear protection unless you want to sustain ear damage, something to be considered when choosing a hunting rifle! Have you thought about a 7mm 08? It is mild recoil, I know a number of youth/women who use this chambering with no problems. It does offer some advantages over others in the low recoil class in way of the .284 bullet used and best part no need for a brake or BOSS to be used. I also suggest buying and installing her a good recoil pad, this will make a difference vs the factory ones most rifles come with when it comes to felt recoil.

Best of luck.

RE: Boss and Recoil Question

I concur with Skeeter..a 7-08,270 or a 260 would be better and no need for that boss. Just put a Sims pad on it or a decelerator and be done with it

KSHUNTER,
REGARDING BOSS AND LH ACTIONS...
THE BOSS IS A GREAT ADDITION FOR TWEAKING A RIFLE'S ACCURACY BUT IT MAKES FOR ONE LOUD A-- WEAPON. I'VE SEEN EXPERIENCED SHOOTERS FLINCH BECAUSE OF THE MUZZLE BLAST. IT'S ALSO NO FUN BEING AROUND ONE AT THE RANGE.
RE:LH VERSION. I AM A LEFTY. HOWEVER, I GREW UP WHEN A LH ACTION WAS A COSTLY MODIFICATION. I LEARNED TO SHOOT RH ACTIONS. I GOT SO PROFICIENT AT IT THAT I HAVE NOW TRIED LH ACTIONS AND CANNOT USE THEM. LEFTYS CAN SHOOT RH ACTIONS. HOPE THIS HELPS.

RE: Boss and Recoil Question

Thanks for the info guys. You reminded me of something I forgot about.. The noise. I remember shooting a 300 Wby. Mag a few years ago with a Boss like system at the end. The kick was very minimal but I do remember my ears ringing for a while. Especially when I was standing close to an old building. Boss would be a bad idea for her. I like the 7mm-08 but I don't like that it isn't a common cartridge, and can't be picked up about anywhere. I'm going to take her to Cabelas and see how the Micro-Medallion fits her. BTW, I looked on Browning's website and found the Micro-hunter in .243 LH but not the Micro-Medallion in LH. Did I just miss it?

Hope the link works but it shows a Micro in .243/LH.

The 7mm -08 here is not hard to find ammo for, I would say it's popularity is on the rise in fact. Hard to believe that it would be harder to find ammo than here but I am sure you are more versed with what is pop./available for your area. You may also consider a 308 win.

Very good advice.

RE: Boss and Recoil Question

I concur on the BOSS-CR thing...my brother-in-law bought a new 30-06 A-bolt medallion this weekend. People at the range all stopped and looked up when he fired it. Switched to the BOSS tip and was much quieter. That sucker was loud. So loud that not only did my ears still hurt with earmuff style hearing protection but you could "feel" the retort in your chest!
