Because of low levels of funding, My current favorite is the Ruger P97DC. I have had about every 45 there is including the Sig, colt Springfield and Star. Through all kinds of ammo types and level of loads, nothing has ever been more reliable and had better function than the Ruger. Its not pretty its not as smooth and the trigger is not great but all in all it gets the job done everytime I pick it up. Thats all I can ask.

IMHO you cant beat a Kimber (take your pick of model, they are ALL equally superior if you ask me). From my tests there IS more than $500 difference between a Kimber and say a Springfield 1911 (a great gun for the money no doubt!) but IMO there is NOT $1000 difference between say a Custom TLE and something like a Les Baer or a Wilson Combat. Both of those are extremely fine pieces, but I haven't seen them shoot $1000 better than any Kimber I have ever fired.

If you are just going to keep it in your pocket for protection, seldom shoot or clean it then yeah I also would recommend the Glock!

Another vote for the Kimber. I've shot their "cheap" Custom models up to the Super Match and I don't think any other mass-produced .45 comes close to the fit and finish of them. Like Red said, some of the custom gunmakers like Les Baer, Ed Brown and Wilson make a great .45, but they're not worth the extra money over the Kimber. As you can see, I prefer the 1911 style autos, but if its a combat style you're talking about, I'll take an H&K USP over all the others. just my opinion.

Kimber!!! In a mass produced 1911 style pistol you can't get any better. If you can't afford one save your money until you can and you will not be sorry. Pick any model they are great. My next purchase will definitely be a Kimber.

Pretty much any 1911 based .45. I have a SA 1911-A1 that I have had for 10yrs + and love it.

The 1911 is time tested.
