We Need an Optics Forum

We need an Optics forum so we can really have fun. You know Zeiss vs Leupold vs Simmons vs Nikon vs Tasco vs Swarovski ....that kind of fun

Good Idea! Would be interesting!

Half the time I don't post anything regarding scopes and if I do its under Hunting Gear Review. Scopes are more important then rifles in my humble opinion.

I wonder how many hunters wound game with open sights on long shots
that THINK they might make it?
When young and had good eyes is different than when you're middle age,
but when you're old it's drastic.
I think even when you are young, you should start out shooting with a scope.

My opinion!!

Don't need no dang optics forum. Why? Your sighting problems are all taken care of with the following two solutions:
1. Williams Fool Proof Receiver style sight - with large twighlight aparture.
2. Leupold scopes (VXII or VXIII).

Nothing else is needed.

Ok, ok, I'm ducking already!

If I had niot started hunting until I could afford a Luepold scope, I would have missed the first 48 years of hunting. My eyes are old and they don't use anything except a good scope or a very good peep sight. I have had at least 50 scopes over the years. Most were Bushnell and Tasco. I never in all of those years had a scope fail and cause me to miss a shot or not provide a clear picture and enough light to make a good shot. I now use a few Luepolds and Swift scopes and like the Aetecs best of all. I hear horror stories of cheap scopes failing. Never had it happen to me. Most of the scope failures that I saw as a gun dealer were caused from poor mounting and just plain abuse. By far the most common problem was adjusting the elevation or windage to the end of their adjustment range and not using the rings and base to do most of the adjustment before they touch the scope adjustment dials. This will wreck a scope in short order.

James, when I was 18 and in the US army,I was on the shooting team. Shooting with Peep Sight on the
M1-Garand.
Now I can't even SEE the Peep Sight, just a blurred piece of metal!!!

2. Leupold scopes (VXII or VXIII).
Boy that is enough to warrant a forum

Rebel Hog. I know what you mean. My first rifle was an old Eddiestone with peep sights. I could shoot 250 yards or more at deer back then. When I shoot my Buffalo classic now I have to walk half down the bench to see the front sight:D. It has a rear peep and a globe front. I have a small circle insert in the front sight and I was suprised at how well I could see the target at 100 yards. I lost my good eye many years ago in a constuction accident and had to learn to shoot left handed with my none master eye. AAHH the golden years.[:'(]

James, I am right handed with LEFT dominate eye,but can't shoot left handed cause of an old ingury to left shoulder.
What I do is place a small stick-on tag on LEFT lense of shooting glasses, just enough to cover LEFT pupil and it has
worked good for me for years. I'm talking about SHOTGUNING. On rifles I use 4-12 x 44 or 50, but they have to be
good light gathering scopes. I have been using ZEISS scopes for about 15yrs or so.Over the years I have come down
on caliburs also, from 7mm Mags to .270 and last few years to 6.5 x 55 Swed., for Deer. I have a Ruger M77 SS/ Lam Stock
in .243. Quess that's my next one.
Yes the golden years!!!

Not just scopes either, it could have discussions on binos, red-dot, fiber sites, range finders, anything optical.

Oldelk, start it off, what's your choice and why do you think it's better.

RE: We Need an Optics Forum

Well first off all the other forums are more focused. Big game hunting is discussed in the big game forum ..guns are discussed here even though lots of times scopes are mentioned as well. Would be an easier place to search on specific scopes other then tying up resources doing a search in the subject and body of a post's dating back a year looking for feedback on a specific scope.

RE: We Need an Optics Forum

You're right, we do. Right now, scope posts appear in Guns, Firearm Reviews, and Hunting Gear. Since it doesn't seem that everyone will agree on where to post scope topics, a scope forum is certainly called for. Heck, it could be called "Optics" to include bino's and spotting scopes, even sun glasses (see Off Season right now.)
