Default VERY RARE GUN ? What can you tell me about it.

I had a fellow give me a gun as part of a deal payoff.
We live in North Carolina, pure hill billy area.
He said the gun was his grandfathers and only been shot a few times.
He said he had been trying to "redo" the gun to restore it to it's original condition.

The ONLY plastic part on the entire gun is the butt plate he added to it last year.

The gun has NO SERIAL NUMBER at ALL.
NONE. It was never filed off, it was never there. I have taken it to MANY gun smiths that have seen it and looked and verified NO serial number.

The ONLY marking on the gun that could be even remotley a serial number says :

No 10

And it is inside the "breach"

The stamp on the barrel says 27v on one side and 47A on the other in tiny little circles.
It says
Stevens Model 940E
Savage Arms
Westfield Mass U.S.A.

It is a model .410

Okay inside Breach with Markin NO 10

Sorry to let you know, but I don't think your gun is worth more than $150.00, maybe less

Well if your 410 is twice as rare it might then go for $300, but I doubt it.

This is what the standard catalog of firearms has to say about it:

This company manufactured a number of single barrel, break open, single-shot shotguns. They were produced chambered for various gauges with various-legth barrels and chokes. They are quite similar in appearance and were designed as inexpensive, utility-grade weapons. There is little or no collector interest in them at this time, and their values are similar. We list them for reference purposes only.

Exc $120 V.G. $80 Good $75 Fair $50 Poor $25

This was published several years ago, so pricing could have changed. But more than likely not. Also, the "E" might be a date code for 1953. Hope this helps some.

Also this is what their grading system is:

Excellent
The firearm must be in at least 98% condition with respect to blue wear, stock or grip finish, and bore. It must also be in 100% original factory condition without refinishing, repair, alterations, ect.

Very good
At least 92% condition, no alterations.

Good
At least 80% finish, minor alterations acceptable.

Fair
At least 30% finish, must be in working condition.

Poor
Little metal or wood finish remain. Rusting and pitting will be seen.

I'm going along with what others have stated. Having no serial # isn't uncomon on old guns as doing so wasn't always required. Also, being it was someone's grandfather's gun, I'd think value would have been more sentimental than real dollar. Sad. [&o] Hate to say it, but you may have a $80 gun for a sale and maybe $50 on a dealer trade.
