Which one would be the best for a groundhog- other varmit gun. Distance varies from 30-130 yards. I would also like to know the best gun in that cal. I really like the savages with the accu-trigger

I agree with the .223. If you were going to shoot longer, maybe something faster, but no need. You can find plenty of ammo for it everywhere and cheap military ammo also for plinking.

The Hornet would be ideal at those ranges, but it is tough to reload, the cases are too fragile. For not too much more noise the .221 Fireball does the same thing with a little heavier bullet, and reloads forever.

of the 3 you're asking about, hands down the Hornet... that'll handle hogs to 200 yards, has no recoil, very little muzzle blast... as far as reloading, a little attention to detail and there's nothing difficult at all about loading the Hornet... 12gr of Lil-Gun under a 40gr V-Max, a CCI small pistol primer in Winchester cases and that's all that needs to be said about that...

They all would work, but i'd take the 223 for all the reasons already posted!!!
Also resale would probable be better than the other two too, if you ever decide to sell or trade it off later on...

Cabelas has Wolf bulk ammo in .223 for only 11.4 cents per round. That's pretty arn good, considering all I've seen. I know Wolf is looked down on by some, but I got 1,000 rounds of 9mm from them and have shot about 200 so far without problems, so I trust them. And you really can't beat the price. Great for plinking at cans or casual target practice.
And I forgot to mention I am looking at the Savage Model 16 in .223, so if you end up getting that let me know how it is.
