surface rust
Loaned my marlin 30/30 out for a year ,now it has some surface rust on the lever & barrel. Whats the best remedy?(besides not loaning it to someone who doesn't clean/take care of it)[:@]

RE: surface rust
I've ran across a gun or two that had light rust on them. I used Hoppes 9 and some elbow grease to remove it, then oil it down real good. I've never seen heavy rust. Hope everything works out for you.

RE: surface rust
Being light rust it shouldn't be hard to remove.I would get some 4 ought(oooo) steelwool and some light oil.Saturate the SW with the oil and lightly go over the rusted areas.Do not apply to much pressure. You'll remove bluing. When satisfied clean and apply a coat of protective oil. That's one thing I'll never do loan a firearm or vehicle out.You usually get the short end of the stick when you do.

RE: surface rust
Yah its a bad habit loaning your gun out! The best way to get rust off of blueing or a gun,use Motor oil for its cheap and does have detergents in it,with 0000 size steel wool.Just put a little oil on the steel wool and run it over the area to be cleaned and boom its gone. hope i helped some. vangunsmith
