Which 30-06 should I get?
Here is what I am looking at:
http://www.remington.com/firearms/ce...re/7400syn.htm or http://www.savagearms.com/116fcsak.htm Which one would be a better buy/gun? Thanks for your opinion. |
RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
Jedi,
What are your hunting senerios like, are you hunting close cover shots under 150 yds, quick fallow ups or are you a stand hunter or a stalker? Are you taking long shots 250+ yds? I like the 7400 for general hunting aplications, but I would throw it out the window and take a 7600 pump in a heartbeat. The savage's are a good gun and would suit your needs good, you also might look at the Rem. 700 CDL or the Winchester Featherweight. BBJ |
RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
I have a Marlin 30-30 That I use for 150 and closed shots. I wanted something 150+ I already have a 6-18 X 50mm scope. All I need is the gun, ammo, and pleanty of rangetime to practice. :)

RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
Then Jedi look to the savage or anyother of the good bolt guns out there.I have a Ren 7600 that I have taken deer and antelope out to 350+ yds it's a 30-06.

RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
I am not a huge fan of a semi auto rifle especially the Remington 7400.
Personally I would go for the bolt action. There is a reason that they are so popular. They are very accurate, easy to clean and maintain and can be had in every conceivable configuration and caliber. Forget about the muzzle brake for a 30-06. The 30-06 isn't a shoulder pounding rifle to begin with and the brake will just create excesive muzzle blast and noise. You will literally need hearing protection to hunt. Savage does make a good rifle. Assuming you have about $500+- to spend ona rifle Others to look at are Howa/ Weatherby vanguard, Remington 700, Charles Daly mausers (NIB superior grade 25-06 is for sale in the classafieds section HERE), Ruger, Winchester, Tikka (30-06 for sale in the classafieds HERE). I would also dump the 6-18X scope. They are much better suited to a varmint rifle than a big game rifle. It will hinder you more than it will help you. Look for a variable starting 2 or 3X and up to 9 or 12X. This range will give you all the magnification that you will ever need in a big game rifle. |
RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
Bigbulls hit every single nail right on the head, especially about muzzle brakes. I have a Remington 742 semi-auto in .30-06, and unless I let the barrel cool all the way down to COLD it throws pretty large groups. If it's winter and I let the barrel get completely cold I have managed a few four shot 100 yard one inch groups, but this is hardly the way one might want to use a semi-auto. I've never had a jam in mine but I read lots of posts from guys who have. I HAVE had brush and debris collect in the action to the point where I didn't dare shoot it without a good field cleaning. Never had this problem with any of my bolt rifles.
For longer shots I believe that you'd be happier with a bolt rifle, or perhaps the Rem 7600 (NOT the older 760.) Good luck! |
RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
Amen to that; bigbulls is right on the money.
I'm quite happy with the 700 ADL. I'd prefer a bolt-action over a pump, and a pump over a semi-auto. I haven't used a Savage, but most of the hunters I talk to think they're a great buy for the money. |
RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
Of the two choices you noted, the Savage would be the better choice. As you noted, you already have a good 30-30 for the close stuff. There's no beating a good quality
bolt action for longer range accuracy. And, there's some places don't allow the use of semi-autos for hunting (state of PA.). Now, for near the same $$$ as the Savage, you may want to check out the new Remington 700 SPS series. They make one with syn. stock, and stainless. Here's a link to the Remington web page - check it out; Model 700 SPS Stainless: http://www.remington.com/firearms/ce.../700sps_ss.htm IMO this would be the better rifle, and as noted you don't need a muzzle brake on a 30-06. As for scope, what you have is too much. Look for a good quality variable in the 2-7x or 3-9x power range - more than enough for big game hunting. |
RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
i would go with the savage. and i, like most other people are agreeing with bigbulls
|
RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
I also would stay away from the 7400. I don't have any recent experience with the rem autos but the JAMMASTER reputation has stuck with them from the past. Another consideration is where are you going to hunt, many states autoloaders are illegal. Your looking at the $400-$500 range, there are many quality guns out there. Howa, Winchester, Remington, Ruger, etc.

RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
Forgot to mention, check the gun shops for consignment guns as well, nothing wrong with buying a used gun if you take your time and shop smart.

Even die hard Remington friends of mine, laugh and say, "My Remingtons prettier, and feels nicer, but those Savages sure will out shoot it". Dollar for Dollar you cannot beat a Savage!!! |

RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
Hello Jedi Knight,
The best way to answer that question is hang at the rifle range and see alot of 06's,ask alot of question, maybe they would let you shoot thiers. Check out what ammo they are using and notice thier targets when they bring them in. That might help you decide.....If you don't have access to a rifle range, well everyone is going to mention thier model. I like Ruger! Everyone has thier opinion. But at a range you can see FACTS....Do some compareing on 5 or6 models? Check the features on all.....GOOD LUCK, JEDI.... KEEP ON ROOTING!!! |
RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
Jedi Knight
Noever owned or shot a Savage but like others have said, I've heard they are very accurate. If you are seriously considering a Semi-Auto, the Browning BAR is the only way to go! I've got a BAR Safari in 30-06 that will shoot MOA or better with 180Grn Sierra Game Kings, 165Grn Nosler Partitions and 180Grn Nosler Ballistic Tips. I've shot about 500 rounds through this gun with no jamming or problems what so ever. The only thing I've done to it is have the trigger worked on, which now has a clean crisp 2 1/2" pull. firstshot |

Jedi,
If you come up and go to the range with me, remind me and I will let you shoot my 742, and 7600, and you can make a decision for yourself if you like them. |
RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
Of the 2 choices you mention the Savage is a much better buy, IMO. I have a Savage model 16 that I purchased back in December and it is proving to be a very accurate gun, although it is chambered in 270 wsm. I also have a Ruger M77 MKII in 30-06 that is a good shooter and has taken a lot of deer. Having said that I also have my Dad's Remington 742 in 30-06 that he used to take a bunch of deer with. I have put a bunch of rounds through it over the years and have never seen it jam....never heard him talk about it jamming either, however they do have that reputation.
One more thing on the Savage...I see you are looking at the model with the muzzlebrake. You could probably save yourself 100 bucks or more and pick up a 116 in stainless without the muzzlebrake. IMO, the brake is really not needed on a 30-06....unless you just really want it. |
RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
Not to make any Remington auto Rifles mad, but I once had a 742 in 3006. It was ok for a while, then started jamming, shooting all over the place and the fireing pin would hit the primer when you loaded the rifle. Got tired of all the new clips, cleaning etc. I went and got me a Browning Bar in 30.06. That was 20 years ago and over a 100 Deer later. If you want a good auto, just compare the two. Slide the actions back and you will feel the differents. Longest shot was 200yds. To thick here in most places to get many shots longer. It did make a good boat paddle.:D

RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
i like the 30-06 caliber, i think it is one of the best, as far as which one of the two is the best i cant treally say, i own a winchester model 70 and like it alot. the only thing i dont like about your selections, and this is only my OPINION, is the synthetic stocks, i still like the wood stocks myself, good luck in finding your gun, i think you will be happy when you find the right one.

RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
get the rifle that fits YOU best. the first few threads pretty much covered it :Dkeep in mind that if you want the weatherby, but have a savage budget, look for a used gun, brand new isnt all its cracked up to be....your best deals through your life are going to be on used rifles. new guns dont allow for much in the way of barganing.

RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
I love the savage accu-trigger. Savage makes great shooting, accurate guns that dont clean out your wallet.
|
RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
Take the 7600 instead. They also offer the synthetic it the 7600 also, but i prefer the wood version.

Bigbulls,
and can be had in every conceivable configuration and caliber Regards, Steve |
RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
JEDI,
IF THERE IS ANYTHING OUT THERE THAT CAN TOP A REMINGTON 700 OUT THERE I HAVE YET TO FIND IT. TRY LOOKING ON GUNSAMERICA, AUCTION ARMS, OR GUN BROKER TO FIND A USED ONE. IT WILL LAST FOREVER AND DO WHATEVER YOU ASK IT TO DO. THERE IS A REASON MOST CUSTOM RIFLE MAKERS USE A REMINGTON 700 ACTION. THE 7400, WHILE A WONDERFUL "SWAMP GUN" IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR A GOOD BOLT ACTION. |
RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
ORIGINAL: mossy33oak Jedi, If you come up and go to the range with me, remind me and I will let you shoot my 742, and 7600, and you can make a decision for yourself if you like them. mossy33oak, IN my safe theres a Rem 742 that I bought used about 12yrs ago. It has a crack in the RING of steel, that REM is always plugging on, on the face of the bolt. They told me that Rem. has no parts available for the Mod 742, anymore. They told me that if I would send them $329 and the mod 742 they would replace it with Mod 7600.I figured $329 + $200 I had in the 742 equals $529> I don't think so. That's what turned me off on Remington's... Always inspect the Ring on the bolt after firing. |
RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
SAVAGE HANDS DOWN
|
RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
For under 150 id go with the remington, but beyond that i would want the Savage because it is a bolt action and they are more accurate than a semi i hear
|
RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
Cant go wrong with a remington:) i have pretty much the same gun but in a pump action....:D it can knock a dime off a tee at 100yards
|
RE: Which 30-06 should I get?
I like the Remington 700's. When you get into the larger caliber firearms the new lightweight or sporter models are less in weight, but bigger on recoil. My favorite hunting rifle is the 700 VLS in 308 Win. The added weight is not to reuce recoil, but the additional front weight of this barrel makes for a much steadier platform for those long shots that seem to be an issue with the lighter barrel models. A bit more weight, but well worth it.;)
