Default Savage 99 question

I have a Savage 99, but can't figure out which variant it is. How do you tell? I heard once that it was stamped on the inside, but I don't want to dismantle it if I don't have to.

There is a site I go to called (www.canadiangunnutz.com). There are a couple Savage 99 "lovers" on there that can tell you more than all you want to know about a Sav. 99.

I have only 2 of them and I like them a bunch. With my .300 savage I took a moose a white-tail doe and two wolves last fall.

Duffy

I have a Savage .243 and love it - I am thinking of buying a Savage in .300 caliber for going out west and using it on elk -

How is yours for accuracy out of the box - and what about range - is there much drop. .300 is supposed to be pretty flat and hold knock down power way out there isn't it?

jhoffman,
I don't want to speak for Duffy, but the 300 Savage round he speaks of is just a bit below the 308 in power and effectiveness. I'm not trying to sell it short, just wanting to make sure you understand it's relative effectiveness. It appeared to me, from your brief comments, that you may be attributing the "300" of the Savage round to the "300" of some other more potent rounds.
The 300 savage is plenty gun for a lot of big game animals. But don't view it as more than it is. If you place it just a rung below the 308 you have a good idea of its very ample effectiveness. it is actually just a little below the 7.62 X 54 Russian, which is just below the 308. All 3 are fine rounds though.

Are the .300 Savage and the .300 Win Mag camparable or is the .300 Win Mag a much more potent round -

I have just gotten into high power rifles a couple of years ago and am not sure about all the different calibers and rounds available.

In WNY where I do most of my hunting it is shotgun only for deer and there isn't any real Big game like elk around. I use a Remington 870 with 3" Mag Federal Slugs for whitetail.

Here's one more question - Every time I shoot Remington Ammo - Slugs in particular out of my 870 it jams- but I can use Federal, Winchester, Berneke - None jam ?

jhoffman, I can't speak on the Remington ammo, but as for the .300 Savage, as it was said before, is a little under the .308 Winchester, and no where near any of the .300 magnum calibers.

I own two Savage 99's along with many other firearms old and new. I have a Model F in .300 and an old take down in .250. If the safety is on top it is a later made gun. If the safety is on the lever it is older, look at the features on the rifle and you can tell what model it is. I am currently looking for a 99 F in .358 if anybody has one.

I have a model 1899 in 300 savage according to the serial # it was made sometime during 1922. These are fine rifles and If you see one don't pass it up. The 300 savage is close to the same power as the 308 winchester. The winchester has a slightly longer neck which allows it to hold more powder. I would say in a more modern action which could handle the pressure and a faster burning powder, you could hand load the 300 savage to do anything a 308 winchester can. But these are my opinions.
