.308 question
What's the maximum distance a .308/150 gr. bullet will travel. I'm not talking accurately, just total distance the bullet will fly.

RE: .308 question
Thanks for the info. A guy was trying to tell me Marine snipers using 7.62 match ammo are accurate out to 8,000 meters. I didn't think that was possible.

RE: .308 question
Accurate at 8 kilometers? 5 miles? How would they even see the target?
800 meters they can shoot all day long, but 8 thousand is a loooong way. |
RE: .308 question
Tell your buddy that he needs to go back to school.
The Earths surface curves about 8 inches per mile. So at 5 miles the earth curves about 40 inches. So unless your buddy has some new over the horrizon capeable bullets with their own built in radar system it is not possible for him to see, much less hit a target five miles away from a sitting or prone position even if the bullet would travel that far. And that would be one hell of an offhand shot standing up. |
RE: .308 question
Carlos Hathcock,BEST DAMN SNIPER EVER, couldnt make an 8000meter shot.As yall said, thats a looooooong ways away!

RE: .308 question
Gosh, what power scope do those guys have, 100X? :D
|
RE: .308 question
8,000 meters is 8Km which equals 5 miles. The longest recorded combat sniper kill that I've heard of is 2400meters (1.5 miles) and that was with a 50BMG in Afghanistan. I'd have to say that an 8,000 meter hit with a .308 would have to be a little bit of a stretch.

RE: .308 question
IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN, CARLOS HATHCOCK'S LONGEST CONFIRMED KILL WITH A 308 WAS 1400 METERS.
|
RE: .308 question
according to a ballistics calculator I have, a 150 grain pill from a 308 with a muzzle velocity of 2,820 fps is only going a little over 1000 fps at 1000 meters. someone stated the maximum distance a 308 will go was 4,470 yards my guess is by the time the bullet reaches 4,000 yards its probably only going 100 fps or even less LOL just enough to put a nice bruise on someone....... 8,000 meters BLAHAHAH

RE: .308 question
Sounds like your friend put an extra '0' in his distance. Our scout/snipers hit targets at 800m all the time, but 8,000 is unrealistic at best.

RE: .308 question
Sounds like this guy tried to fill you up on a serving of B.S.:D

RE: .308 question
With a M2HB .50cal Browning Heavy Machinegun, with a 10X Unertl scope on top, in single shot mode. Very impressive. The target was a 10 year old VC courier pushing a bicycle with a bunch of rifles strapped to it. He actually made two shots. The first one took out the forks of the bike (because he didn't want to shoot a kid), but when the boy picked up the bike and kept going, the second shot ended his service to the Viet Cong for good. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong, as it's been a long time since I read the book).
8,000 yards!? Tell your friend he's full of ****. With a .308 Win I'd believe 1500 yards, MAYBE even 1800, but 8,000?! Like the saying goes, I was born in the dark... ...but it wasn't last night! Mike |
RE: .308 question
Yeah, 8,000 seems like a rather large pile of BS.
