870 supermag or Nova?
My in-laws are wanting to get me a new shotgun for my graduation in May, and I am torn between the new Rem 870 Super-Mag, and the Benelli Nova. I want a 12 gauge that is chambered for the 3.5 because I would like the extra power and range for spring Turkey, deer, and geese. I will be using eihter though with 2.75 on clays, doves, and quail much more than anything else (especially clays).
I like the 870 because I am intimately familiar with them. Everyone has them. That is also one of the downsides. But every rifle I have is also a Remington. I like the option for the recoil reducer in the Benelli, and a lot of the other inovations, such as the one piece moisture resistant synthetic stock and receiver. It would be really nice when we head to the gulf for geese and duck. I dunno, I'm sure you can tell I'm torn. Just for the record, either would be a vast improvement against my Mossburg Mav 88. It is a wonderful bird gun, but I am tearing it up at the clay range. I just feel I insult every target I hit with it. Help. |

RE: 870 supermag or Nova?
They are both good guns. It may come down to which one fits you the best. Because of the one piece stock/receiver, the Benelli stock can't be modifed other than swapping recoil pads.

Of the 2 you listed I would pick the 870...however my favorite is a Browning BPS.

RE: 870 supermag or Nova?
I looked at both and went with the Nova, I now know 7 people with them and none of them have any complaints. The only complaint I had was the forearm rattle. I tightened the two allen screws and it took most of it out. I would recomend the Nova it is a great gun. I shoot 3.5" shells through it all duck and goose season. It has a lot more features than the 870 too.

RE: 870 supermag or Nova?
I have a Nova and I love it! The 870 is a good gun, you don't sell the same model with the same technology for 50 years without it being quality. That being said the 870 is a gun of 1950's technology where the Nova is modern and innovative. The nova has been in use long enough to establish it as a reliable firearm!

RE: 870 supermag or Nova?
Thanks for the help.
I have always used Remington arms, and it is hard to break with tradition, but I wanted the Nova all along I think. I'll get the nova and take the flak for buying an Italian gun. At least I'll be happy. Thanks again. |
