which one would u choose
i have a 243 but was looking to get little bit bigger gun. i mainly hunt whitetale in texas but was wanting to hunt occasional mulies and pronghorn. which gun would be better a 25 06 or a 270 that is what i am thinking of but am open to suggestions what would you do

RE: which one would u choose
Both of the cartridges you are considering, the 25-06 & 270Win., would be excellent choices for pronghorn and mule deer, as well as those whitetails you currently hunt.
Personally, I'd pick the 270Win. I think it's more versatile, with the heavier bullet weights available. And, given past experience, I can't tell the difference in recoil levels between rifles of equal design/weight (117/120gr. vs. 130gr. in 270). I think too, the 270Win. will give you a better/wider selection of ammo to choose from. ps: keep the 243Win. for varmints ;) |
RE: which one would u choose
.270 Win. Good luck.

RE: which one would u choose
I have to buck everybody else's choice and say stay with the 243. Nothing wrong with the 25-06 or the 270 just don't see where you would need any more than what you have unless you just want to spend the money like i'm about to. If you wanted to move to something bigger like elk or moose i'd go to at least a 30-06. If you can afford it the I would buy all of them.
I saw a 243wssm at wal-mart which I'm going to buy as soon as the babysitter gets back fron taking the kids to school. I have absolutly no NEED for it, just want to have it. I personnaly want one of all of em Brad |
RE: which one would u choose
.270 would be my choice.

RE: which one would u choose
Normally I would say the 25-06. However if you are going to keep your 243 then it would make sense to go with the 270 to seperate your options a little more. I condiser the 25-06 to be far superior to the 243 which I consider a good varmit rifle but not really a deer rifle. The 270 though would be a good choice if you are keeping your 243 for the smaller stuff.

RE: which one would u choose
I would certainly keep the .243 for whitetail. I would then pick the 270 from your 2 choices, however, for mulies and long antelope shots, the 7mag is something to consider....especially if elk are on your radar screen. With the 7mag, you've got the whole package. Good Luck, Rick.

If you're open to suggestions don't forget to take a look at the .260 Remington as well.

270 would be a great choise. it the most popular round here in alberta.

RE: which one would u choose
If your going to be traveling alot for pronghorns you should consider the .25 WSSM as it chambered in super short actions..saves you an inch in total length and a 1/4 pound from a even a short action....

RE: which one would u choose
well i was talking to a freind today and they said to go with a 264 mag i have never heard of one does anyone konw if that would be better than a 270
|
RE: which one would u choose
get a 30-06 then you can shoot anything, lots of different bullets to choose from too
|
RE: which one would u choose
the first gun i ever owned was a 3006 and i didnt like it. i would shoot a 2' group one day and a 7" the next just never did impress me.

RE: which one would u choose
270 is a flat shooter and just the right size for those little texan deer

ORIGINAL: timgrant_75 well i was talking to a freind today and they said to go with a 264 mag i have never heard of one does anyone konw if that would be better than a 270 Now going back to the original question.Since keeping a 243 .Of the two calbers mentioned my choice would be the 270 Win.I've laid many a deer low with a 270. It's made a believer out of me.Don't rule out a 30-06. They are very versatile . From varmints to big game. Ruger Redhawk |

270 would be my choice.

RE: which one would u choose
I have a270 win ,25-06 both sitting in the safe and use my 243Win instead .
|
RE: which one would u choose
either would work its a hard choice there between the 25-06 and 270, but a 243 would also work for mulies and pronghorns ive have seen many of both species taken with a 243.
|
RE: which one would u choose
keep the .243.......its a wicked little gun......can handle those game no probs
|
RE: which one would u choose
Halcon, besides the 6.5, I like my .243.{both Rugers} Also have it in .270 and 7mmRem mag...
You have good choices also. Keep them, you won't regret it. Just choose the right ammo. ![]() |
RE: which one would u choose
timgrant, You have a fast rifle with the 243. Both the 25:06 and 270 are also fast rounds. I would suggest a 308 Win. The 308 is bit more versatile and with your 243 you have two rifles that pretty much cover the spectrum from varmint to big game.
Good Hunting... |
RE: which one would u choose
Get the 270

RE: which one would u choose
A .243 is a necked down 308 anyways, with extreme velosity. When you can take out 300 pound bores with a .243(done it from 175 yards) Theres no need for anything else. That gun with the righ round will take em all down out to 250 yards in a heartbeat.
But if you must, the .270 is a great choice. Harry |
RE: which one would u choose
hey tim on ur question the 25-06 would be a excellent choice while lacking knockdown power it makes up for it in long range shooting. if u handload ur shells u can easily hit high velocities. currently my favorite is a 7mm rem mag savage model 110 24 inch barrel with 3-9 40 scope. 140 grain loads can easily take a muley, or whitetail down at 300+ yds. this caliber is also good for elk but a larger load would be needed. if u need anyother help just mail 1shot.

RE: which one would u choose
A .243 is a necked down 308 anyways, with extreme velosity. As a handloader and shooting at only Texas whitetails up to mule deer, I'd probably pick the .25-06 (in a Tikka T3). If I ever had an inkling to hunt anything bigger I'd pick the .270 in a heartbeat. Also, if I did not handload, I'd definately pick the .270 first. Mike |
RE: which one would u choose
270 win. My model 70 syn feather weight is a great gun. I use 130gr for deer super X power points. 150gr. for 270win are for elk or bear. dunhams's also carry an inexpensive 270win load.

RE: which one would u choose
.270 Win. Good luck.

RE: which one would u choose
timgrant_75,
I feel your pain. You mean which one should you buy first, don't you? If you're like me you'll buy one and 6 or 8 months later start feeling the itch to get the other. |
RE: which one would u choose
id go with the .270 win
