The 308 has far more power than the 357 mag. If you what to use a pistol cartridge go up to the 44 mag.(still not the power of the 308) but good for shorter ranges(100 yards max.).

If your talkin heavily wooded, short to medium range hunting and a levergun I can't believe no-one has mentioned the one single gun that has taken more deer than any other, maybe all others combined. The model 94 .30-.30, you can even stretch that one out to 200 maybe 225.

Forget a .357 unless you are handgun hunting,a .308 is the way to go.

Frankly the .357 Mag is not a hunting round of any form.....it just lacks the requisite punch for big game and IMO not sporting or responsible.
