my brother did some damage with his 96/44 on a black bear. he loaded up some 300 grain hornady xtps. works great in my 629 classic too!

A .357 will kill deer DEAD.I know people who have killed deer with .22mags.It all comes down to shot placement.

The 44 mag will take just about anything around here if the range is right and bullet placement is right.I have three rugers and one contender in 44 mag I never have had a problem. JD Jones has taken cape buffalo with a 44 mag I think.

A 44mag is a great deer round in pistols but it's fantastic in a carbide with a longer barrel. The extra 12 or so inches usually gives the round a 600 or so fps boost and allows accuracy that pistols can only dream of. Just make sure you use a bullet designed for hunting. Stay away from the tiny hollow points, the extra speed and power just cause them to fragment on the first bone they touch leaving wounded game.
