what cal. to pick
i own a 243, 30 06. and can get a hold of a 7mm mag. i hunt mostly deer and maybe some moose throw in. the deer are mulies out on the parries. what cal would fit the bill to fit between these? im thinkin 270. i dont need anything bigger then the 30 06.
Im askin because im thinking of taking a gunsmithing course wich involes building your own rifle. you have to buy the barrel blank and action and stock and you machine it to all fit together. so i would like it to be my hunting rifle. |
RE: what cal. to pick
Many a moose have fallen to a 270...but if you seriously plan hunt moose (or anything bigger than deer) the 30-06 will give you selection of much better suited bullets.
Is this what you were asking? Or were you wanting a random catridge suggestion for a deer-moose gun? also, would you be handloading for the new gun. Because this opens up a whole other world of feasible catridges |

ORIGINAL: gopher slayer i own a 243, 30 06. and can get a hold of a 7mm mag. i hunt mostly deer and maybe some moose throw in. the deer are mulies out on the parries. what cal would fit the bill to fit between these? im thinkin 270. i dont need anything bigger then the 30 06...... mule deer thru moose? Obviously you already have a pretty good selection with the 30-06, and access to a 7mmRem.Mag. Of course, when building a new rifle why chamber it to something you already have. I'd go along with the 270Win., but it might be considered a little light on moose by some. But, it'll do. Another that I would look at is the 280Rem. With availability of heavier 7mm bullets it'll give you a little better option for the larger game such as elk & moose. And, if you handload the 280 can come pretty close to the ballistics of the 7mm Mag. |
RE: what cal. to pick
Study up on the 6.5-06. It would fit in their nicely.

RE: what cal. to pick
i dont have any handloading equipment. so all loads will be factory. yeah im just asking what your sugestion for a cartridge would be.
|
RE: what cal. to pick
I think the .270 or .25-06 would be good guns for hunting deer on the prairies. If I were going to shoot something bigger, I'd probably just use the 30-06.
Or try something new, like a WSM. |
RE: what cal. to pick
if you dont need or want anything larger than a 3006, you might think about a .308. i wouldn't suggest a .270 but thats my opinion. using factory loads the .308 has a lot of options. good luck with the gunsmith class.

RE: what cal. to pick
There ain't nothin' that fits well in between the .243 and the .30-06, so if'n I was you I'd trade in the .243 for a .260. And if you are into varmints pick up a .204 or .22-250. ;) There will come a day when you discover you don't need that '06 and you won't have to look for a replacement. :D

RE: what cal. to pick
I would go for the 7mm Rem. Mag. Good luck
|
RE: what cal. to pick
If your going to build up a standard cartridge, i would go with the good 270.If your going with something you can reloadmand is not standard i would go with the8mm-06 vangunsmith

RE: what cal. to pick
6.5x55 or 270 Winchester
|
RE: what cal. to pick
i will second the .308win. if you dont reload you can easly find any kind of ammo for it and buy surpluss ammo for like $0.10 a round so it would be cheap to shoot al day long as well. that would be my chioce.;)
good luck on the class and the rifle what evr your chioce is.;) |
RE: what cal. to pick
Consider the 7mm-08.

RE: what cal. to pick
man cool project, what action, and barrel blank will you use, on the caliber i would build something you don't have or have access to, all the ideas mentioned sound good, the 280, 260, 270. 6.5X55, but i think i would build a wsm cal. myself, since i don't own one now and thats what you'll have to have in the future if you want to kill anything;),
best of luck, whens school start, keep us up to date on the project |
RE: what cal. to pick
you may not hand load now but if you're going to be a gunsmith, you're going to have to start... not everyone shoots the off the shelf calibers and you'll need ammo to test your work with...
with that being said, may I suggest the 280 AI, it'll shoot off the shelf 280's, blowing them out to the AI version... save them and when you start reloading you can turn them up a notch and equal 7mag velocities with the lighter bullets, and still be able to load 160-175 for the larger game... if for some reason you never reload, pack them up and send'em to ole Uncle Dale... I'll take good care of them for you...;) |

man cool project, what action, and barrel blank will you use, you may not hand load now but if you're going to be a gunsmith, you're going to have to start whens school start, Ive been looking and the 270 wsm looks very interesting. its only $6 more for box of shells and it performs well. i think i may take the course with my brother inlaw who wants to build a 300 wsm. |
