Illuminated Reticle

Does anyone have any thoughts on an illuminated reticle scope? When does it come in handy? Is it worth the extra couple of hundred bucks? Are there any particular brands recommended - Leupold, Zeiss? I am buying a Savage Model 12 22-250 and I'm looking for a good scope to put on it. I've never really looked through an illuminated reticle scope before and I was wondering how well they work. When people say low light conditions, does this include nightime with a spotlight?

Rattlesnake, Rather than spend the extra money on illuminated reticle, invest the money in a LPS Leupold. You won't need it with this scope.;)
