pawn shops?
I went to the pawn shop the other day just to see what they had in guns because that was what they specialized in. I asked if they carried any 7mm-08 guns and they said no but they can order them. They showed me a catalog of NEW guns. There was a 7mm-08 Savage gun brand new for $399. There were also remingtons and winchesters for a reasonable price. I was just so used to going to bass pro in springfield MO seeing good guns for $600 and up. Is there a catch at pawn shops? Why would they be that cheap or is bass pro over priced? Is it too good to be true? would they be defectice new guns? Just curious, has anyone had any experiences with pawn shop guns? A winchester at winchestergun.com have a 7mm-08 for almost $800. The pawn shop owner said that you are just paying for the name......
Any suggestions? Thanks, Melissa |

That's about the going price for a savage rifle.

RE: pawn shops?
Sorry, the main brands I know are remington, win, ruger, and browning. Even the Remingtons were at a good price at the pawn shop. So Savage guns are pretty cheap? Are they good accurate guns though?
Thanks |
RE: pawn shops?
Yes,good gun for the $ Suppossed to be very accurate right out of the box.

RE: pawn shops?
Befoe you jump in and get one at a pawn shop checkout Walmart and these internet places to get an idea of the going price of guns. Keep in mind though if you get one through the internet you may be charged shipping and FFL charges.

RE: pawn shops?
Savage is a good rifle for the $$$. Very accurate too. I've not owned any Savage, but a good friend of mine is hooked on 'em because they make a lot of left handed models.
He's had nothing but good experiences in the last 30+ years of having various Savage rifles. As to the pawn shop, check with your local BBB office. If they're a problem there should be some record of it. Here in my area there are several shops, including one pawn shop I know of, that will order a gun for you at cost +10%. As noted, you can also check approx. prices for new guns on several internet websites for gun auctions. Of course, if you purchase a gun via auction you have to have it shipped to your local FFL dealer. You will need to pay shipping (usually a modest/fixed figure), plus any transfer fee your local shop charges. Be sure to check first if your local dealer will handle these transfers, and how much he charges. RE: pawn shops?
You mentioned the pawn shop having a good price compared to bass pro shops....that's really not surprising. Bass pro shops are notorious for being really high priced. $390-400 is a typical price for the Savage rifles. The "problem" with Savage rifles is that they're not as highly refined as other higher priced rifles. They're not as pretty. However, they're usually just as accurate, or even MORE accurate than typical Rugers, Remingtons, Winchesters, Brownings, etc etc, and for about half the price.

Like my saying always goes......the pretty halter horses usualy cant run barrels, but my ugly mare can run them fast. It doest take a pretty horse to win.

I would also make sure that you were not looking at THEIR prices from distributors. Their is a big difference in what they pay the dist. and what a dealer charges you. Most dealers I know want to make 25-50 bucks for the paperwork of ordering a gun. Just something to look into.

RE: pawn shops?
I have purchased a number of used guns from pawn shops. The idea is you find the gun inspect it well, inside and out. Then go home do your research and figure out what it is worth, scope, mount, rings, strap, bi-pod, mods etc. Add it all up. If it is in good shape you will typically save 30 sometimes 40% off new list price. Don't pay what is on the sticker, offer what it is worth, they will know you know if your offer is fair. There are books out there that will tell you what it's worth, that's what the pawn shop uses too. Develope a repore with the Owner not one of his flunkies. Make sure he agrees that the weapon can be returned if after a trip to the range if your not happy with what you purchased.
Makes my wife nuts but I do drive bys at a pawn shop or 2 at least once a mointh just to see if they have any good trade ins. Good stuff goes fast. . . Got a great deal on a rem model 7 last year for my sons. It was on display for only 4 hours when I found it. |
RE: pawn shops?
I doh't much care for pawn shops, the owners usually look up a used gun in a blue book and ask for the maximum listed there. Mostly the guns they get don't deserve more than the minimum price. Of course, if you are orderin' a new gun that's different.

RE: pawn shops?
One reason that pawn brokers can sell new guns cheap is because they already have a FFL to deal used guns. They can use their FFL to order new guns from wholesalers, so many of them will charge you 10% over their price to order you a gun! Thats not too bad of a profit for ordering you a gun, while they are sitting there minding the pawn shop anyway!
Also, you can get some pretty good guns used at pawn shops. You just have to know how to look for quality. Most pawn dealers do mark their used guns pretty high, but most of them will also deal with you too! |
RE: pawn shops?
A got a savage weather warrior ordered through my pawn shop for 250 bucks. It's not pretty like the remington I own, however it will out shoot it. Nothing wrong with the gun other than the looks.

RE: pawn shops?
The only thing is that at a pawn shop they will probably not stand behind their guns like a gun shop will. I dont know, Ive never bought a gun from there, but it is something to consider. I have a savage 110 .270 win and it is an excellent shooter. They are very accurate guns, but they just dont have all the shiny crap that bigger companies charge you for.

RE: pawn shops?
I've done some shopping for guns at pawn shops, and found some good bargains. You gotta spend a fair amount of time looking, though, to be in the right place at the right time.
