25-06 deer bullet
I just bought a rugar 25-06 and plan to shoot a deer with it this year, i was wondering what would be a good bullet to use. I was thinking about sierra 117gr sbt?

RE: 25-06 deer bullet
I used to use a 257 wby for all my deer hunting and the only bullets I used were 100gr partitions and later on 100gr ballistic tips. Both did a fine job but the deer shot with partitions seemed to run for a distance before dropping while the ballistic tips seemed to produce quicker kills.

RE: 25-06 deer bullet
IF you are shooting 300yds and in any bullet between 100 and 120 will work. I like shooting 115 Nosler Ballistic Tips for farther out there with my .25-06. They expand rapidly causeing alot of damage killing the deer quicker than a a bonded bullet like a Nosler Partitions, X Bullets, Grand Slams and many others. They are controlled expansion so they expand slower.
Why work when you can hunt???? Heck why work at all!! |
RE: 25-06 deer bullet
The 117 sierras are good. Also, the plain jane 120gr Core-Lokt's seem to be good deer droppers out of the 25-06. My buddy shoots one at our camp and he shoots the Core-Lokt's. He rarely has one run from the point of impact.

RE: 25-06 deer bullet
For factory rounds I use Winchester- 120 gr.PXP.When I started hand loading for my .25-06 I used 100 gr.ballistic tips .Both shoot really well out of mine I believe it will like anything I feed it.

RE: 25-06 deer bullet
I had very good results with the 117 Sierra PSPBT from a .25/'06 on the small Central Texas whitetails!! Very destructive bullet at .25/'06 velocities.

RE: 25-06 deer bullet
My friend got me on to the 25.06. 80% of the deer he shoots drop
where they are standing using a 100 gr. ballistic tip at 3,300 fps. So I bought a 25.06 and shot 2 deer with the ballistic tip last year. Both dropped where they stood. Accuracy at 100 yards is good. Three shot groups around 3/4 inch. |
RE: 25-06 deer bullet
All my shots would be no longer than 200yds, most will be 100yds. so would a balistic tip work well at close ranges?

RE: 25-06 deer bullet
I have taken deer and pronghorn with Hornady 120gr HP from 30 yards out to 300...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: 25-06 deer bullet
I have had good results with ballistic tips as close as 20 yards and as far as over 400 yards.

RE: 25-06 deer bullet
I used federal premium w/ 117 seirra for a couple of years before I started handloading. Super bullet on big MI deer. They act as if struck by lightning. I'm going to try ballistic tips this year only because I have 4 boxes. If you do use core-lokts use the 120 gr. My self and a couple of friends have had bad luck with the 100 gr

RE: 25-06 deer bullet
The sierra 117 grain works great in my 25-06.

RE: 25-06 deer bullet
Any bullet thats at least 100 gr. should work fine, my personal preference would be for the 120 gr. bullets. Just pick one thats made well and wont over expand to quickly and fail to give good penetration. I'd choose the Nosler Partition, Barnes X, or some Failsafe. Try several and find out what shoots best in your gun.

RE: 25-06 deer bullet
I found a good deal on Remington ammo in a 117 gr bullet so I bought quite a bit of it for the brass . I decided to use it for hunting because I didn't have time to do any handloads . I have shot four times at deer with it in three years and got four bucks .All one shot kills that never moved ,you can't ask for more than that . Never have done the handloads for it .

RE: 25-06 deer bullet
Wily, yes the ballistic tip will work well at under 100 yards and
well beyond 100 yards. If you reload, my friends 25.06 likes IMR 4350. Mine likes IMR 4831. There are alot of fine bullets out there for the 25.06 like the 120gr. grand slam which also is very accurate in my gun. Now you need to experiment to see what your rifle likes. |
RE: 25-06 deer bullet
Several years back I got a rifle barreled to 257 Ackely which is about the same ballistics wise as a 2506, and my son hunted with it for several years and now a friends' son has hunted with it for several years. In all that time we have used at least a half dozen bullets in it, and we both finally came to the conclusion that we really like the performance of 120 gr bullets of all types over the 100 gr. The 115, 117, and 120gr bullets have a tendency to dig in much deeper than the 100's and we like that. I know several people who hunt with 100 gr bullets, and frankly I think the only reason they do is because they think the extra velocity they get over the heavier bullets is of some great benefit to them in terms of hunting game. I dont think it is myself, but its like a friend of mine says, It dont matter if something is true or if you just believe it to be true. Any bullet in a 2506 will kill deer, start shooting deer with different ones and compare. See what you think. Have fun with it.
