Barrett M468 (6.8 SPC)

Looking around on the internet last night, I found that Barret is producing an AR-15 style semi-auto chambered for the new 6.8 SPC. I got to thinking, and was looking at the price. You can buy the complete weapon for $2700, or the upper for roughly $1600. I also went to Brownell's and you can get a complete DPMS lower for $300 or so, which would bring the total cost of the gun down to $1900, savings of $800!!!

Has anyone had a chance to handle or fire the complete Barrett weapon, or has anybody purchased the upper to put on their current AR-15 Lower? Just a thought that started going through my mind last night, and it looked pretty interesting. I am not seeing any other manufacturers that are producing an upper chambered to the 6.8 SPC.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

That's a lot of money for a mini .270. [:-]

Alexander Arms and the 6.5 Grendel would be a better choice IMHO. Accuracy is there, brass is better. 6.5 bullets are more coefficient than the 277 bullets. Etc...

The Barrett had all kinds of troubles in teh military tests, including numerous failures at Ft Richardsons testing grounds.

Thanks for the info! I also looked a little farther, and DPMS also has an upper in 6.8 SPC. Plus the link that you provided Ridge -Runner. BTW, I am not a big fan of the WSM's quite yet. I like the sleeker cartridges, especially in a semi-auto. I just think that the short, fat cartridges could cause some problems in a semi-auto with certain bullets, and would rather not bother with it. I already have a .223, and a .30-06, so this 6.8 would be mainly for a "fun gun" somewhere in the middle!

id like to see the 6.8 spc in a compact bolt action might make for a great deer gun especially for youths and smaller framed ladies. or just a fun gun to have in the pick up for varmints the caliber might make a great varmint gun on those windy days especially if the cost of ammo stays around the price of a box .223. I heard that the 6.8 is basically a rimless 30-30 cartridge necked down to a 270 cal. might make for a cost effective 200 yard match round. Im totally looking forward to owning one.
