.500 S&W NEF

I was just visiting the NEF website and noticed that they have started chambering the Handi in the .500 S&W...What do ya'll think of that for a deer rifle:D?

I've said many times before that I would LOVE to have a TC Encore with a 500Smith in say a 18" barrel. Would be one HELL of a quick lil package to carry around for the woods. And even better than that, how about a leveraction like a 336 in a 500? :)

But I think my wishes were basically met while flippin thru a catalog the other day. I believe it was Stoeger that is releasing a .454 Casull lever gun!!! At least with it you could plink around with 45LC rounds. The 500 would be one EXPENSIVE lil gun to feed. [:@]

FUN FUN FUN,

I have thought about the one in the handi rifle. However I have it in 45-70 and there really is not much to be gained by going to the 500 S&W. Except for the extra fun that is.:D

I don't know that I'd buy it. Granted it's a strong pistol cartridge, but if you're buying a rifle looking for a powerful cartridge and willing to pay that much for ammo, you might as well buy a high powered centerfire rifle round.

Granted, I love pistol cartridge rifles, but as far as buying a single shot rifle in the .500, I just can't see the benefit. Like James said, the .45-70 Handi-rifle would make more sense, more power and less expensive. Most guys get pistol cartridge rifles for economic plinking, say a .357mag or .44mag rifle, but the .500S&W ain't no economy cartridge, to say the least!!

if you want a 500 get a revolver.... the 45-70 or the 450 in leveraction are better choices
a 500 pistol is gonna be a lot quicker in the thick woods.

For those who dont have a 45/70 or those who want to match ther .500 handgun i think this is a great idea. I myself made a big mistake last year when i sold my marlin 1895ss so i think i will try this handi rifle and if Marlin could put this into one of there lever actions i will be the first on there waiting list. And if you are not a reloader the 500 goes 1900fps with a 350 grain bullet in a handgun. This will beat out factory loads in the 45/70. I am talking about Rem, Win, Fed, as these are the only ammunition makers that Marlin reccomends in there firearms.

Someone mentioned speed in the woods , as the handgun would be faster,. yesh you probibly could get six shots out fgaster but would you hit anything with the recoil of the handgun, i would go with the lever action for speed and accuracy, just my opinion. Tanoose

I always thought that the 500 S&W was a bit too much for a handgun.. but in a short barrel, lever or single shot rifle, it'd be just what you need to hunt deer in the woods...
