Date Rem. adopted the 7-08???
 

Am I smokin crack or did Remington not standardize the 7-08 as their own sometime in the early 80s? I aint positive but I sure seem to remember it happenin around then.

The reason I ask is that there is a Savage model 99 on GunBroker.com that the owner claims was a very limited production run of 7-08Rems that was built in the early 70s. The bidding is already over $1k, but I think some folks are gettin taken too the cleaners on this one. The pics even show "7-08Rem" stamped on the barrel in a different script than the other lettering on it.

I am not exactly sure, but it was either 1978 or 1980 when Remington standardized the 7mm-08.

Believe Remington legitimized the 7mm-08 about 1980. Of course, it was a well known
wildcat cartridge prior to that. As I recall it wasn't until a year or two later that Savage
chambered it in their model 99C. A quick call or maybe an email to Savage should
confirm things easily enough. What would trouble me or make me suspicious is if the
cartridge stamping on the barrel is in the different script/lettering as you noted. That's not a good sign. As noted on the auction websites, "caveat emptor". [:-]

Well, I just took a look myself out of curiosity. As suspected, it's a 99C which was the
last model 99 made by Savage, I beleive, before they finally discontinued the 99s.
I don't see a problem with the script ref. the barrel markings, but maybe I'm missing something. The seller has a lot of positive feedback noted (only one negative), and that's a very good sign. Also, the serial number is given (except for the last three or so
digits as is common). Again, a quick check with Savage should confirm things if needed,
and that's something any bidder/buyer can do first.;)

hmmm I dont know. But at least you guys assured me that I wasn't goin insane (maybe I've always been there from the start? [:o] ) when I thought I remembered the dates for that caliber.

Maybe the guy has his date of manufacture wrong? But then again, the serial begins with a D and thats not a 1980 or later designation.

Who knows, I still think its a "caveat emptor" kinda deal. He even states that the 99C wasn't built past 1965 and then again for two years 95-97. So if the caliber wasn't tagged by Remington until 80 and the gun wasn't built then... wtf? [:-]

And lets say that it WAS actually a 1980 vintage 99C, the bluing wear sure doesn't speak well for its upkeep history! [:'(]

I think it was in the Mid 80's when they were introduced..something does not sound right Savage never made a 7-08 in a 99 at least to my knowledge

Looked in the 24th edition "Blue Book of Gun Values". On page 1285 it states that a model 99C was made in 7-08 with a 22 inch bbl , Monte Carlo stock, top tang safety, detatchable 4 shot mag. Mfg. 1965, 1995-1997.
Add 5% for .284 win or 7-08 cal.
