300 Weatherby vs 7 mm REM MAG

I have a Weatherby MK V in 7 MM REM MAG. I have a line a 300 Weatherby which I am interested in at a good price. Are these calibers too similar to notice a difference? I would like to use the 300 Weatherby on big bears.

The weatherby will shoot flatter and deliver a heavier bullet at extended distances. It will definitely recoil more then the 7 Rem mag

Cost of ammo is a consideration if you don't reload. 300 weatherby ammo is big $$$$

If by BIG BEARS you are talking brown and grizz then I would jump up to a .338 win mag which will recoil about the same as a .300 WBY but deliver a 250 gr. slug. Much better for hunting bears. Great round for moose also, I have killed quite a few with it.

if you like your 7mm and you want big bears i agree you should go with the .338 winchester magnum.

The .300 Wby. Mag. Is a greater preformer than the 7mm Rem. Mag., and yes, people use the .300 Wby. Mag. for hunting the great bears. Good luck.

If big bears are on the menu ,I prefer the .338" bullets.

As much as I love the 338 as THE classic all around 1 gun for the North American continent, I must confess my love for the original "super 30" the 300 WbyMag. From a handloaders table you cant convince me that a 200grain Xbullet fired stoutly from a 300Wby wont do anything a 338 with a 250 will do, you just cant convince me.

If price is no matter, then go for it. With the cost of todays premium standard mag ammunition (Fed Prem/Vital Shok, Win Sup, Hornady etc) vs the cost of Weatherby ammo for the 300 and below, there isnt that much difference anymore.

A full boat 300Wby from a throated gun is MUCH more gun than the 7Rem ever thought about being. Theres just no comparison. Sure the Wby whomps on you more, but be a man and take it. Gonna shoot BIG guns you need to act like a BIG boy! ;)

One thing about the 338 vs the 300Wby, EITHER will be a fine gun. Personally if I were picking a BIG bear gun it would be a .375 H&H for work under 300yds and a .378 Wby for longer shots. But seldom will you shoot a BIG bear that far. Its just to dangerous and many guides wont let you do it. THEY are the ones who have to wade in and sort the pieces out if he doesnt fall at the shot. You can NEVER kill a pissed grizzley (and they ALL become that way as soon as you put a hole in them) too dead!!! :(

Good luck,
RA

Of course if you really want to stay with the .308" bullets the 300ultramag offers slightly more punch than the 300wby.With .338" bullets the 338ultramag offers noticeably more punch than the 338winmag and offers flatter trajectory as well for longer ranges.

You could go with the 30-378 Weatherby if you want more than the 300 RUM!

I own both and there's no question the .300 Wby is more gun than the 7mm Rem Mag. If I was hunting bears I'd certainly want the .300 over the 7mm.

RE: 300 Weatherby vs 7 mm REM MAG

I have a Weatherby Vanguard in 300 WBY Magnum and a Remington 700 BDL in 7mm REM Mag and it is my impression that the Weatherby actually has less felt recoil and is more pleasant to shoot than the Remington, even though the Weatherby fires the more powerful carteridge. Therefore, you also should consider the recoil pad and stock of the rifles you are looking at as well as the calibers. Another consideration is, if you are on a budget, ammunition is more expensive for the 300 WBY Mag, though it is by no means cheap for the 7 mm Rem Mag. Looking at the balistics of the two rounds, while the Weatherby is the more powerful, I think it is likely that either would easily kill any game animal in North America, including large bears, with decent bullet placement.

The .300 Weatherby is substantially more gun than the 7mm Rem Mag. I have both, and like both. But if I were hunting Bears, something that if it got mad at me and decided, unlike other animals that almost always run away, to kill me, I'd have to stop it with my gun, I'd go with a .340 Weatherby Magnum. The .30-378 is one cannon too.

The .338 Winchester Mag, as is mentioned above, is a thumper too, but won't gain you enough over the .300 Weatherby to bother.

I wouldn't go with a 7mm Remington Mag for big bears.
