Is a 300 win mag tooo much??

I found a deal on a savage 300 win mag. It has a comp stock, stainless W/porting. Has a reasonable 3-9X40 and overall is pretty clean. The Texas hill counrty Deer are not all that big. I typically have used or seen guys use .260, .270, 30-06. but is the 300 win mag way to much? I don't need much of a push to buy it just wondering. I bet it would be great for some of the bigger hogs running around.

I already have a .270 and a .260 in bolt action long guns, have a lever action brush gun in .357 for the open sight close up days. My safe could use that bigger round:D

For occasional use on whitetail it is fine..If all Iwas going to do was hunt whitetail though I would look at smaller and you have that area covered as well.

there is no such thing as tooo much! use a AT4 it will already be cooked. just kidding. it will work fine for deer even at long range. if you have the money and an empty spot in your safe then by all means buy it! but it will be very loud if it is ported.;)

I have a 300 Win Mag and I have hunted hill country deer and IMO it is too much gun fr them. No matter which bullets I used there was always massive tissue damage and blood shock. I guess it would be ok if you have to make a lot of long shots, otherwise if you plan on this being your primary rifle for hunting Texas hill country deer, I'd have to say there are much better choices available. Now, if you are looking for a rifle that you may use to go hunting elk or larger game and just wanting to add another gun to your collection, then I'd jump all over it. ;)

Ok, yes, a 300Win.Mag. is way more than needed for Texas whitetails, but you've really already answered your own question as to wether you should purchase the rifle or not -

Ans.:

My safe could use that bigger round
Seems reasonable to me:D

I use a 300 win every year it is all in the bulets and the speed you push them. I shoot 150s for deer and 185s for elk. BUY a good bulet one that dose not fragment.I use corelocks. I destroy very little meatuntill i hut a big bone like the nee joint. then it expands bad. Make good shots deer drop on the spot at very long shots if you want to shoot them.I all so do not max load my shells this allso makes a big difrants.

If you shoot some kind of expantion bullet you are asking for blood shot deer.

A 300 win is just a 30 cal bullet that can be pushed faster than 3006.

Thanks guys. . .I might have to pick this one up. As for the noise of a ported gun, my .260 is ported and yepp it will rock your world if you shoot from a blind with out ear protection. I can only imagine the report I will get with the 300 WM.

Off I go with an old glock and an old 6x40 scope to do some tradin.:D

A .300 Win mag would only be too much if you couldn't handle the recoil. If you can handle it okay and shoot it accurately, then there's no reason not to use it. I use my .300 Weatherby (a little faster than the .300 Win) more than any other rifle when I'm deer hunting and I've never experienced what I'd call excessive meat loss. Use something like the Barnes Triple Shock (I like the 168 gr., myself) and you'll be fine.
