I posted this in the Firearm review forum but I'll put it here too. Which would you pick for average to large bodied deer and a few elk?

You have a larger selection in guns with the 7 Rem mag. Both Calibers are close but I prefer the 7 rem mag because it handles heavier bullets and cartridge availability is greater. The typical winchester model 70 with its "Short action" is not that much lighter then a 700 and in some cases may outweigh it.

The 7mmRM is proven through and through, very true. Yes there are many more rifles to choose from and much more factory ammo, but the .270WSM is catching on like wildfire. That being said the advantages of a .270WSM vs. the 7mmRM can't be ignored, even if they are minimal. If a person already has a 7mmRM then I'd say don't get the .270WSM, but for a new shopper I'd say the .270WSM is a great caliber. The downside right now is that it' caught on so well that getting a rifle in .270WSM is almost impossible, trust me on that one!

Out of all the WSM's and not including the WSSM's it holds the least attraction for me. There are probably more lightweight rifles built for the 270 Win and the difference between the 2 is not enough to matter in practical terms. Like I said previously you can probably find as many rifles in 7Rem mag that are just as light as a comparable rifle in 270WSM unless you include Kimber,BRowning Abolt SS or a Tikka(gulp).

sorry to barge in on your topic, but I'm new to the sight, and just bought my first Deer rifle. the Tikka T3 lite in 7mm. have you had some trouble with the tikka? I have only heard very good things about them. Just trying to see now if anyone is aware of a round it likes?

If the .270 WSM keeps going like it is, there will probably be more rifle selections and ammo available in the future. That's why I'm considering it.

As soon as you throw in elk into the picture then the 7mm mag pulls away from the .270WSM. In fact the 7 will do everything better than the .270WSM and you can get it in vittually the same weight rifle. Nothing wrong with the .270WSM really, you just get more with a 7mm. Why don't you look at a 7mmWSM also if you like those short cases?

I bought the 270 wsm...why?...I could not really tell you other than I wanted a new gun and I wanted to try a wsm. I looked at the 270 wsm and the 7mm wsm and the 270wsm is just easier to find. That includes rifles and factory ammo. Now if you consider the 7mm rem mag then it is definately more popular than the 270 wsm. Personally the 270 wsm will take anything that I will ever hunt. If the 270 wsm won't get the job done, then you probably need to go to a bigger bullet than a 7mm.

Again, for large deer, and because you are including Elk in the bag, I'd go with the 7mm Rem. Mag. Power wise (velocity/energy) the 270WSM is pretty good, but I'd opt for the 7mm for the heavier bullets available, both in factory ammo, and as handloading components.
